The Orioles Winning The World Series Would be Unprecedented In Modern Baseball History

That’s got nothing to do with whether the Orioles will win.

And, we don’t really know what model the Orioles are going to follow.  We won’t know that until 3-4 years from now when our top producers start to get expensive.  The low payroll now is mostly a function of the fact that our best players are pre-Arb or in the early stages of arbitration.  That won’t be the case a few years from now, unless Elias starts trading everyone away when they reach Arb 2 or so.   That hasn’t been put to the test yet.

Well, we do seem to know that one model they aren't following is locking up young talent in their first or second year in the majors or even before they reach the majors (a'la Wander Franco, Corbin Carroll, etc).   We won't have to wait 3 or 4 years to know whether the Orioles are following that particular strategy.   While it hasn't yet been proven they won't, early returns do not look good.

Adley is a catcher and you have to be skeptical about giving large contracts to catchers in their 30s. The body can only take so much abuse. Gunnar is a Boras client and Boras clients are Patrick Bateman corporatists. They don't take anything less than full market value. For what it's worth Holliday is a Boras client as well. What would you have the Os do here? Players hire agents who best represent their interests. If money is your overwhelming #1 priority you get the best ambulance chaser you can find.

One critical component in the calculus will be the international player development system. It has to produce talent for the O's to compete consistently when they don't draft at the top of the table. Elias has spoken of a consistent pipeline of talent. That will need to come from all facets of player development. International prospects are generally less expensive but much less reliable in their development. They need to start hitting on their Latin American prospects soon.

Sammy Basallo says hi.  Just give him another 2 years or so to reach the majors.

So many pro sports are dependent on who gets hot in the playoffs.  It is very hit or miss.

Baseball depends on pitching and hitting.

Football on a hot QB. of defense.

Hockey a hot goaltender.

The only real sport that is pretty pure to form is NBA basketball.  Normally the best team wins.  Regardless of hot streaks.

And injuries to a key player(s) in September can doom a team that was favored to win the pennant.

Houston is probably the toughest AL team we could face. I’m thinking it’s a good chance they’re the #2 seed.

I agree with this.  They have the toughest set of proven playoff hitters and their bullpen is also solid.  Ironically, I don’t find their mine up to be that deep but the first four are really scary and seem to always be up when it matters.

There is no way to know if this is true.  We don’t know that Adley is willing to sign an extension under any circumstances.  Given his age, he may prefer to hit free agency as young as possible.  As for Gunnar, we don’t know his thoughts but Boras being his agent tells you in general that he is looking to maximize his compensation.  That generally is done through hitting free agency as soon as possible.

one possible helpful thing is these guys are supposedly almost abnormally close.  Apparently the parents do things together almost like Little League parents. Maybe that creates an opening to keep to keep them all together somewhat like the Yankees did with Jeter et al.  Of course, it won’t necessarily be cheap but maybe you get some slight discounts.   If they are really good, fans will come.

Should have extended Gunnar before he moved to Boras.

    • There have been 2-3 times when it seemed logical to call him up but they don’t.   I’ve never understood this thing they have for Baker.  Hey, Cole Irvin is available again!!
    • While we lost some talented players, I think the consensus was some of the players we lost were actually blocking more talented prospects. The loss of Westburg and Urias should have been mostly offset by Holliday and Mayo. Instead, they were truly abysmal.  Povich had some nice moments but he was disappointing as well.  Maybe our expectations were too high - Elias is not going to hit on every prospect, and even the ones that turn out good may take a while to adjust. Still, I think it is fair to have expected more out of Mayo and Holliday since the organization deemed them ready to promote.  In addition to the prospects, you had Adley hit a wall, going from a 6 WAR pace to replacement level, and Cowser and O'Hearn both struggling.  Certainly injuries hurt us, but we should have been strong enough to overcome them. Maybe not to sustain a 105 win pace but I think it is fair to say we should have been able to beat 95 wins and win the division even with the injuries.
    • I was wondering what the knee-jerk reaction would be to an ugly game last night, but the truth is that the bullpen is fine, as is the rest of the team. We lack a true lockdown closer, but we have six arms by my count that are very good relievers in Akin, Perez, Coulombe, Webb, Cano, and Domingez. And you can add Suarez to that list next week, and possibly Povich, who should also make the PS roster as a lefty long relief option to mirror Suarez. Anyway, that game could have and would have gone much differently, IMO, if it were a playoff game. Burnes obviously stays in longer and gets at least through the top of the order if not back down to the bottom third to hand it over to the bullpen. Hopefully we'd be able to scratch out some runs, but that's not the bullpen's fault.  This is an extremely good team with a lead. Let's hope we get on the board early and often starting tonight.
    • Boy, Brandon Young who has some decent numbers at Norfolk must be injured or unimpressive to the front office to not even get a look for this bullpen. Bryan Baker is almost a waste of a call up.
    • Povich is off vs Detroit at least. Even if they carry a 9 man pen, Doubt that 5 will be left handers
    • I hate to say it because they are all eligible to succeed or fail ( DC just coming back ), would probally go with Soto.
