Mariners series 2

Just Regular

Recommended Posts

Just like last year, they have found a hot streak and need just a 28-20 finish to hit 90 wins a third straight year.     They've swept Angels and Padres series entering tonight.

Raise your hand if you thought JP Crawford was ahead of Adley in OBP.     Julio is hot, but both Castillo and Bryce Miller have been a little wonky lately.    Miller I've heard described in the Strider mold - its a beautiful fastball and he tries to be a closer for 5-6 innings.

AL Active Roster k-bb standing among 30 ip starters (Irvin low man in the group this series):

(43) Gibson v. (6) Castillo

(49) Irvin v. (11) Kirby

(31) Bradish v. (14) B. Miller

With a typical turn, Gibson would be a strong 2nd to Cole on the league Innings Pitched leaderboard.    Castillo and Bradish are both in the back half of the Top 10 in the league ERA race.

Bottom of SEA lineup, two of the new guys from the Sewald trade - Dominic Canzone and Josh Rojas - have given them a couple extra lefty bats at the bottom of the order.    Andres Munoz has covered the Sewald closer role well - no great surprise as he's a very good reliever whatever inning.

Seattle has been at home since Tuesday and got to enjoy an off day yesterday. Everyone in their bullpen should be available, having not gotten too overworked in their 6-1 win over Padres Wednesday night.

Also notable: Tonight is Felix Hernandez night in Seattle. Our own Felix threw 23 pitches (was that all?) so there could potentially be some "King Felix" references thanks to the ASG interaction.

Also also notable: Will this be Kevin Brown night for us?

The last time the Os and Ms played was in late June in Baltimore. Os were outscored 19 to 10 but won the 3-game series after dropping the first one. The Mariners weren't as hot then as they are now -- at that time it was the Reds (our very next series) who had won 12 in a row before the Braves put a stop to their streak.

Santander was scorching hot, hitting 5 homers over a 6 game span. Anthony Bemboom contributed with a game-winning hit, and McKenna walked off another game with a homer in extras.

With that series' win, the Os were 47-29 and still 4.5 games back of the Rays.

Well, if I remember correctly during the first series the Friday night game had a massive rain delay, and once the game started the O's didn't. As they've shown, there's not a team this season that they can't hang with so I don't imagine they're going to be intimidated by Seattle's winning ways. 2out of 3 and keep it moving.

We seem to have played a lot of teams that were hot going into their series with the O’s.  Hopefully we will cool off the Mariners.

The O’s took two of three against the Mariners in Baltimore, winning games started by Miller and Kirby.  We fared pretty well off Miller, chasing him after 4.1 innings and scoring 3 runs.  Kirby was a tougher nut, though we ultimately scored 3 (2 earned) in 6.1 IP and held on for a 3-2 win.  We haven’t faced Castillo.

The Mariners routed Gibson, scoring 5 in 3 innings in a game they won 13-1.   He’s made 14 career starts against Seattle and has been decent, posting a 4.21 ERA.  They haven’t faced irvin this year, but they absolutely owned him when he was with Oakland, hammering him for an 8.42 ERA and an 0-6 record.  This seems like exactly the wrong time for an Irvin spot start.  They had a tough time with Bradish, who allowed only 2 runs in 7 innings to ourduel Kirby.

Our offense is better than Seattle’s, 4.93 runs/game and 107 OPS vs. 4.55/101.

I'm going to games on Saturday and Sunday.  It's a sellout on Saturday for Felix Hernandez's induction ceremony into the Mariners HOF before the game.  Sunday is his bobble-head day, so I would expect another big crowd.  Can't wait - hope the O's show up ready to play.

Do they know that there’s a new King Felix?

Obviously the goal is to win the division, but if we fail in that regard it would be good to have the tiebreak with other wild card contenders in case it comes down to that for wild card seeding or a wildcard spot.

If we win 2 of 3, we would have the tiebreak with Seattle AND would be 9.5 games up on them so effectively we'd be 10 games up on them.

If we win 1 of 3, we would be 7.5 up on them and 3-3 against them.   The tiebreak would then be based on each team's record in its own division (Seattle is 19-11 vs the AL West with 22 games left;  we are 24-14 vs the AL East with 14 games left.   So tough to call at this point but they have 6 left vs Oakland so they probably have the odds in their favor to get the tiebreak in that case).

So win 2 of 3 and they are pretty much no longer a threat to catch us for a wild card, back 9.5 with us having the tiebreak.   Lose the series and they are still someone we will have to watch on the scoreboard in August and September if the Rays make a move and jump us.

Adley seems to be hitting a bit better lately.  Hopefully he can put on a show for friends and family out in the Pacific northwest.

Matt Wieters always seemed to rejuvenate on the late summer west coast trips…and he was from the southeast. Hopefully Adley gets a boost from the low humidity as well as from friends and family.

Yes, Kevin Brown will be back tonight. And the whole weekend is Felix Hernandez weekend.
