Why is it a bad thing...

It's not necessarily such a bad thing, however it would definitely be a good thing to go into the season with this issue resolved. I mean, Roberts wants it resolved by then, why not do our best to make him happy. I'd be pleased whether we extend him, or trade him, as long as something is resolved before we go into the season. The idea of him starting out the season with it still up in the air doesn't seem like such a terrible thing though.

I don't think it is. If we end up signing him during the season (though he allegedly doesn't want to negotiate during the season) it will be likely for 3 years, or for reasonable dollars. If it looks like we can't, we look and see if any teams are willing to overpay at the deadline (which there always are). If not, he either walks for draft picks or realizes when he tests the free agent waters that the dollars aren't there for him like in the past. If the options are 4/40 or wait and see, I pick wait and see everytime. He's a great player, he's been a great guy for this organization, but you don't change your philosophy for a 30some year old second baseman.

But what if we have?

AM tried to deal him to the White Sox and it didn't work.

He has offered him a very fair contract and, thus far, its not enough.

Simply put, it is a bad thing because:

1. We would have little trade leverage midseason unless a contender's second baseman gets hurt. So basically, his trade value would go way down IMO. This would also be due to a team renting him for half a season.

2. Brob would then put off negotiations until the offseason where we would have to compete with other teams for his services.

Theres always getting draft picks, and some people may want that, but considering Brob gives us 2 things that nobody else on the horizen could give us (a leadoff hitter and an above average infielder at bat and in the field), we better go all out to resign him before we go into the season.

Finding a new leadoff guy and a new second basemann will be very tough, we have a great option right here, so get it done AM!

...to go into the season without the BRob situation resolved?

You are just like Pete Sampras dude. Serve and volley. You serve this question just to the spot where you want it, so someone will innocently return a comment to which you can slam home your premade or preresearched response into the open court of your unsuspecting opponent.

I sincerely hope I'm not the only one who sees this pattern. From now on: SG=PS.

Well, it cuts down on the possible outcomes, since he has said he won't negotiate during the season.

Right now the options are:

1) extension

2) trade before the season

3) trade after the season

4) he walks for draft picks

Option 1 goes away at some point, as he has said he won't negotiate during

the season.

I can't believe that Hudson won't find a home soon, he's too good a player. Once he does, there is some chance of a resolution (extension, or else B-Rob turns down whatever offer the Orioles have made and we move on to the other options).

Wow, that might be one of the funniest things I've read on here. Truer words never spoken.

It's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just not a good thing. A good thing would be to sign him to a reasonable extension or trade him for a good package of younger players.

Obviously, having the situation unresolved is better than signing him to a grossly overlong, overpriced deal or trading him for an underwhelming package.

whats wrong with holding on to him until the trade deadline and possibly getting more then what is offered now. making a trade just to make a trade doesn't usually give you the best results. waiting until another team is desperate and is will to give up more is the way to go. imo
