bigbird
FWIW... read into this as little or as much as you want. I was told this eveing that a 1 year offer w/option is still on the table to Looper. I was also told we may sign an infield veteran to a minor league deal. No name. He still thinks Roberts will get signed and says Orlando Hudson's deal is holding it up.
JTrea81
I was also told we may sign an infield veteran to a minor league deal. Ray Durham or Nomar? That would be my guess. Nomar would be an interesting bat to have on the bench...

That would make no sense at all. Glad to see we arent offering anything more than a one year deal with an option. Thanks as always BB.

I doubt Durham would take a minor league deal. He is considering retirement since he hasn't received a single offer. Nomar is being looked at by the Phillies, once again, no way he signs a minor league deal with us.

Care to offer some insight as to why? Nomar would be a decent option, his bat is still pretty darn good and he can play many infield positions. wildcard
I was also told we may sign an infield veteran to a minor league deal. No name. Sounds like someone to replace Moore if he gets claimed. This is similar to the Parrish sign after Burres was claimed.

No he wouldn't. He is toast. Mora, Huff, and Wiggington can all play third base. He doesn't have the range for shortstop anymore. Roberts virtually plays everyday. Signing Nomar would be stupid. TheBee
Thanks as always for the info Bigbird. I hope we do sign Looper. I'm going to look at the free agent list again for an infielder who makes sense...

Big Mac
I'm glad to see we are staying firm at one year and an option for Looper.
jdouble777
Perhaps Hudson ends up super cheap and this becomes the best year in the past three to neg. a contract with Roberts, meaning discount. I don't think Looper adds anything that we don't have, out of the heap of pitchers being considered this year there has to be four 4.2 ERA guys, no? I would say Hill, Albers, Uhera, Liz/Waters/Bergenssen all certainly should get close and then add the rest and it makes it much more likely; i.e. Patton, Pauley, Penn, etc. Therefore, I really don't see any point in signing Looper. Gomez and Freel can handle the infield, I agree that Mora, Wiggy, and Huff should be able to split the 1B/3B well enough, I think Snyder might even turn it on after half way...maybe? SoBo
Looper is a simple bridge to one of the many arms on the farm. We don't necessarily need him. But he can eat some innings and the option is there in case the young guys regress or are not ready by 2010. At least that's my opinion on the matter. bmorebirds_24
I don't want to see them sign Looper, Let them young buys fight it out to make the team. Let them grow and when the "big 3" make it up here and start to find their own, that's when we fill in the rotation with what is missing.
TheBee
Aurilia - Cairo- Crede- Durham -Easley -Garciaparra - Mientkiewicz Those are the infielders left on ESPN's list who aren't type A or B free agents Who is it? I remember Emil Brown's name coming up earlier in the year, but he's an OF.
