We could have been a playoff team without Gunnar.

They aren’t one without Bautista or, they are at least fighting for one and are on the borderline but I don’t think they get in.

Gunnar is the best player on the team but he’s not in my top 2 for MVO because we could have replaced him with Ortiz or Mayo and we probably still make the playoffs.

Without Bautista, a team that didn’t have that great of a run differential for most of this season isn’t in the playoffs imo.

An MVP is award should be, if you remove player X and replace him with ???, how much does it affect your team.

We are seeing the drop off of the pen without him and if people are being honest right now, there really isn’t anyone in the pen that you feel super confident in the playoffs in a high leverage situation.

Toronto is 12 games back of us and is probably going to get in. As great as Bautista was I don't think we'd be blowing that many more games. Since his injury we have maintained our lead on Tampa, stayed on a 100 win pace, and beaten some very good teams.

That’s over a far smaller sample size and at a time when the starters and I believe the offense were better than they were for most of the year.

You can’t just look at right now. This is a season long award. The Orioles didn’t have a good run differential for most of the season. They have won a ton of 1 run games. A shaky bullpen, which is exactly what they have without him, can cost you a lot of games.

What in the world is Gibson doing here? Going off of fWAR or something?

anyway, it’s Gunnar

The interesting thing about Gibson is that he was credited with 15 wins, but the team was “only” 19-13 when he started.  The other starters:

Bradish (12 wins): 19-10

Kremer (12 wins): 23-8

Rodriguez (7 wins): 14-9

Wells (7 wins): 11-9

Irvin (1 win): 8-4

Flaherty (1 win): 3-4

Means (1 win): 2-1

The other “starter loss” went to Akin in a bullpen game.

This post just brings home the very satisfying feeling of having several excellent choices, all with brightly Orange colored, team controlled futures......

Certainly a better debate to have than most of the last 25 years.

Hmm, who should win MVO for a god awful team that is an embarrassment to the city, league and fan base?

That seals it then, Kremer for MVO. 😁

Well when I compare how much he contributed to how much I thought he would contribute maybe he deserves consideration.  Did any Oriole have more big hits than Frazier?  I know his glove was another not so valuable thing.

But the few times he he made a remarkable (for him perhaps) defensive play were critical moments.

We are 12.5 games ahead of the team that currently holds the last wild card spot.  I’m extremely confident we’d be in the playoffs with or without Bautista.  Would we have won the division title?  Maybe not.  I might even go so far as probably not.

I voted AR, there is a gap between him and Gunnar stat-wise, but as a former pitcher, I am biased towards great catchers. They impact the game in ways that don't show up in a box score.

That said, glad we have them both.

It's not a coincidence the Orioles haven't been swept in any single series since Adley joined the team. I voted for Gunnar, but I have Adley right there with him. There are very few good catchers in baseball at any one time and the Orioles have one of them.

Was Kyle Gibson put on here as the throwaway pick like when you have multiple choice tests in the Army? :D

Gibson is not even a top five pitcher of the year for the Orioles candidate.

Got the idea from Peter Schmuck; he cited Gibson's team leading win total.   The fact that there are so many good choices tells you what a year it has been.

Adley has been the most valuable since his 2022 debut, but focusing on 2023 alone, the edge goes to Gunnar.

    • I think it’s like when our fans are terrified because a team brings up a spot starter from AAA and we fear they are going to turn into Cy Young.
    • “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.” — A Bartlett Giamatti https://mason.gmu.edu/~rmatz/giamatti.html

By any measure, Cowser is leading AL rookies in WAR, and it’s not that close. “

    • Every year at the end of the season, I feel a little melancholy. For me, the end of summer is not the start of school or the arrival of fall, but the end of baseball season. Today is the last day of a long song, and I will miss it. I know we have at least four more days, but those are in a different category, although I will miss that too when it ends. During the darkest days of the season, I posted frequently that the worst day of baseball is still baseball. When the Os played terrible, I would go focus on the Brewers or the A’s or Mariners(who were almost as frustrating as the Os) and follow along with former Orioles, rooting for all of them. That will all stop by tonight, and I will miss it until next February, when pitchers and catchers report. If I’m still here, I’ll be here.    Go Os…
    • We have to wait and see. But it shouldn’t matter as you have to beat whomever you play.
