I guess they are saying when he came off the bag his first step was an inch or two in the direction of 3rd.   Therefore he was "past second base" and was required to re-touch it on the way back to first, which he didn't.

Kevin Brown is spot on, it is very reminiscent of that play last year when Trey Mancini was ruled to have "taken a turn" towards 2nd on the basis of a slight body turn and maybe an inch or two of leftward motion, so he was called out when they tagged him walking back to first.

Does anyone know what the actual rule is? I know for going to second it has to be a bona fide "attempt" (hence the Mancini call was wrong) but in this case is it solely a matter of positioning?
