Bowden top 40 FA list

Stroman opted out.  Stroman, Giolito, Gray are all looking at ~3/60.  Any chance we bid on one of those 3? I don’t see any other “realistic” FA starting pitchers that are upgrades over the Gibson type.

I think I’d go 3/60 for Stroman. I like his fire on the mound and I think that would blend well with the calm cool collected approach of Bradish at the tip of the rotation. And he could teach GRod a thing or two about harnessing emotion also.

Gray is very interesting at that price. Steve Melewski had a good piece on him today.

I don't think Stroman would opt out if he wasn't.

The last time Stroman had over 200 IP was 2017 as a 26 yo. 

Since then he has had only one season of over 180 IP, 2019.

2020 was a Covid year. He did not pitch.

2021= 179 IP

2022=138.2 IP

2023=136.2 IP

Is JA going to pony up >$21M/year for that level production? Should he?

I wasn't suggesting he would.

I just think that if Stroman would have issue passing a physical he wouldn't have opted out.

When he's on the mound, he's an effective pitcher. The trouble with Stroman is keeping him on the mound. He's an aging SP who has made his living getting the most out of his very athletic but moderately diminutive (for a SP) physique. He's a max effort guy who breaks too often and will pitch most of 2024 as a 33 yo. Health is rather relative to the cost and production expected.

Stroman 1.6 WAR for 20 million vs Gibson .9 WAR for what 11 million at a $1 million raise. Is anybody going to offer more?

Honestly, I’m not committing 60 million dollars for a guy that’s going to give me that. In the last 3 years Stroman has 3.4, 2.6, and 1.6. The other things is 2 straight years of 135 ish innings.
