Naoyuki Uwasawa Offer Being Prepared?

We’ve also lost Khriebel and Gilaspie on waivers since September. Those were two RH up/down guys that had options. You need optionable players over 162. Even if we were to take a flier on a rule 5 arm, or bring Lopez back on a milb deal, both wouldn’t have options.

Relief options w/o 2024 option,

Irvin, Perez, Coloumbe, Baumann, Webb, Davidson

Relief options w/ 2024 option

Wells, Cano, Hall, Baker, Akin, Zimmerman

For the record, I would have no issue. We could use a guy like this, just thought it was funny the poster named two ex-Orioles, and it's the style of pitcher we've signed in the past.

And anyway, Uwasawa could be a reliever for us. We need relief help.

Lefties in the pen so far: Hall, Perez, Coulombe, Irvin.

Uwasawa is a lefty.

Isn't this what fans were saying last year.  OK with signing Gibson but they needed to add a better starter also.   Turns out it was Gibson and Irvin and they won 101.

One thing that seems to happen is the improvement comes from the prospects.

Who are the starting pitching prospects the improvement will come from?

Hard to have any issue with a cheap deal for a guy with the spin rate / IVB that the Orioles and other analytics teams like. I could see how those qualities in a low velo fastball could play up much more vs MLB hitters relative to NPB. If he is optionable, then it’s all upside.

However if he isn’t optionable (which I believe is generally the case for Japanese signees to negotiate that in), then there’s a lot of competition for the last few spots without options. They already have Irvin without options to fill a long RP role in the pen, plus I think Webb, Baker and Baumann and perhaps some others I’m forgetting. And they like to have at least one pen spot available to churn through AAA arms.

Overall I like it either way and won’t lose too much sleep over losing some of the RP candidates without options, but they have to think there is some notable upside here beyond bulk #5 SP / long reliever to lock up a roster spot for this guy.

I think a trade would still be very much on the table, though I would never say that a trade is likely.

I see this is a good way to jump the market and get a guy for less than ML FA value, with upside. Doesn't sound like the contract will hinder further moves.

Still like Wacha as an option. He could be a #3 in this rotation no problem.

The stats don’t show him having starts despite throwing 170 innings per mlb reference. He has a good WHIP but only 124 Ks.

But it does show games which is 22 with 2 complete games. If that’s correct he averages 7 2/3 innings???

Barring a guy who randomly pops that we didn't see coming, the 3 top pitching prospects close to the big leagues would be McDermott, Povich, and Johnson. All interesting guys, but none really are likely to have much of an impact next year beyond a spot start or bullpen help.

Wonder if they view him as a reliever and not a starter?  I know the article mentions a back end starter but that doesn’t mean the Os see it that way. Maybe his stuff plays up in the pen and they feel he can have a demeanor for a higher leverage guy, aka Koji.

My thought as well.

McDermott will probably be in the majors sometime next year as a starter or a reliever.

Means (not a prospect) should have a better ERA than Gibson.

GRod will probably get 32 starts instead of 23.

    • I think it’s like when our fans are terrified because a team brings up a spot starter from AAA and we fear they are going to turn into Cy Young.
    • “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.” — A Bartlett Giamatti https://mason.gmu.edu/~rmatz/giamatti.html

By any measure, Cowser is leading AL rookies in WAR, and it’s not that close. “

    • Every year at the end of the season, I feel a little melancholy. For me, the end of summer is not the start of school or the arrival of fall, but the end of baseball season. Today is the last day of a long song, and I will miss it. I know we have at least four more days, but those are in a different category, although I will miss that too when it ends. During the darkest days of the season, I posted frequently that the worst day of baseball is still baseball. When the Os played terrible, I would go focus on the Brewers or the A’s or Mariners(who were almost as frustrating as the Os) and follow along with former Orioles, rooting for all of them. That will all stop by tonight, and I will miss it until next February, when pitchers and catchers report. If I’m still here, I’ll be here.    Go Os…
    • We have to wait and see. But it shouldn’t matter as you have to beat whomever you play.
