Trade Suggestion: Steven Matz for Urias or Mateo

In return, St. Louis could request one of the many infielders that Baltimore has to offer. Should Brendan Donovan, Tommy Edman, or Nolan Gorman be traded elsewhere, St. Louis will have to net something in return. A versatile infielder such as Ramon Urias or Jorge Mateo could be had for Matz.

Thoughts …. 100 innings as a swing man Middle reliever. 2 years of control, 1.7 WAR, 17 starts, ERA 3.75 with a FIP in the high 3.7s.

I don’t think he’s going to get anyone too excited and Elias would have trouble selling him as a #3 or better.  BUT, at 2/25M and low player cost it wouldn’t shock me.  I hope not though.

It depends…would he be the best SP acquisition this year? If he’s a secondary piece to fight over the 5th spot with Kremer, Wells, and Irvin, then sure. That sounds great.

Im not at all worried about losing Urias or Mateo. They could be DFA and I couldn’t care less.

He might be an interesting project.  He was absolutely dreadful for the first third of last season - so bad that he was sent to the pen where he put it all together almost right away.  Then he was put back in the rotation and was really good for the last third of the season.  2022 was bad and he only managed 48 innings in 15 games (10 starts), but 2021 was good.

Another gamble as to what pitcher you're going to get, but the big question remains: do the O's want to take on a project or take a decisive step that would make the rotation genuinely capable 1-5?

This trade just feels like both teams swapping polished turds. The Cardinals are already loaded in the infield too. Even their back-ups at most of the infield positions are better than what we'd be offering. Also, I can't think of a more disappointingly underwhelming player to trade for than Steven Matz. He's like the pitching equivalent of tofu.

Irvin > Matz as a SP

Irvin, Perez, Coloumbe, Hall > Matz as a RP

Creative Idea. I like Jose Quintana, but the Mets aren’t rebuilding.

Who knows what the Mets are doing.  They replaced  Verlander and Scherzer with Severino so far.

I guess I can see Urias sorta... but why would the want Mateo when they already have Masyn Winn?  Realistically I think Urias alone is a little light for STL's taste and I don't see the case for the O's sweetening the offer given Irvin, Wells and a ton of other options out there.

Matz is owed 2yr/$25 million. There’s no way that we’re paying that let alone trading for it. Trading isn’t a bad idea and I think it’s on the table for us if need be.

That’s a lot cheaper than the alternatives.  Matz has kind of been up and down and has never been an innings eater.   He finished real strong his last six starts but a lat strain ended his season.  In some ways he has Oriole written all over him.   The fact that he’s 32 and his career high in IP is 160 makes me question if he really is their kind of guy.

    • I think it’s like when our fans are terrified because a team brings up a spot starter from AAA and we fear they are going to turn into Cy Young.
    • “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.” — A Bartlett Giamatti https://mason.gmu.edu/~rmatz/giamatti.html

By any measure, Cowser is leading AL rookies in WAR, and it’s not that close. “

    • Every year at the end of the season, I feel a little melancholy. For me, the end of summer is not the start of school or the arrival of fall, but the end of baseball season. Today is the last day of a long song, and I will miss it. I know we have at least four more days, but those are in a different category, although I will miss that too when it ends. During the darkest days of the season, I posted frequently that the worst day of baseball is still baseball. When the Os played terrible, I would go focus on the Brewers or the A’s or Mariners(who were almost as frustrating as the Os) and follow along with former Orioles, rooting for all of them. That will all stop by tonight, and I will miss it until next February, when pitchers and catchers report. If I’m still here, I’ll be here.    Go Os…
    • We have to wait and see. But it shouldn’t matter as you have to beat whomever you play.
