The latest on Spoone is not good

Spoone was hoping to be ready by late April, rather than June or July, which has been the projection, but he began experiencing a "pinching" sensation in his shoulder two weeks ago and stopped throwing. He played catch on Monday, but the recurring tightness won't allow him to proceed with his scheduled routine.

Spoone, who was limited to nine starts at Double-A Bowie because of an injury that later was diagnosed as a SLAP tear, had progressed from making 25 throws from 45 feet to doing two sets of 50. That's when he ran into another problem with his shoulder, and the Orioles are trying to calm it down.

"My arm tightened up and it's been sore for about two weeks now," he said. "I tried to pick up the ball (Monday) and there's still a little pinch there. We'll see if we can stretch it out. I think it's just tight in the back from the surgery. I was hoping to be pitching again by the end of April or early May, but as long as I come back and pitch sometime this year, that's a plus."

Remember, Spoone had his surgery many months after Patton. He should be having ups and downs as he's just started to throw. Besides, re-read the first sentence:

Just sounds to me like he's not ahead of schedule.

This is where I am, as well, though any tightness or pain is a bad omen. I remain cautiously optimistic, though if I had to guess I'd say he's unlikely to reach mid-rotation production and may ultimately be better off in relief. Way too early to tell, though. Thanks to whoever it was that posted the original news.

I hope this is simply the case that he is not ahead of schedule and not that he aggrivated or damaged something by attempting to come back too soon.

That was certainly something we were not looking for. Any kind of setback is not a good sign for his recovery. Right now, we'll all just have to hope for the best but treat Spoone as a bonus if he can come back.

That's the best way to look at it right now. I'm not a fan of Spoone's mechanics and I believe they contributed to his injury, so hopefully he'll make some changes at some point during his recovery.

I am not bothered at all by this report. He only had surgery 5 months ago. You are not allowed to even consider throwing the ball until at least 12 weeks after surgery, and that is if everything goes fine. This is not the end of his career. I have more confidence in his shoulder than I do in Albers. If he doesn't get back at all this year, then I will be concerned. I am happy they are backing him off. He needs to listen to his body. Do the names of Jamie Walker, Baez, Lowen, etc ring a bell as people who were pitching through the pain and not letting anybody know. Shows good maturity that he is admiting it doesn't feel right and not rushing himself when he is seeing everybody else catch and pass him on the organizational ladder. People, please be happy. He had surgery, he should be fine. Have a great weekend.:)

Has anybody heard anything about how he's doing?

Here is an update from Steve Melewski

http://masnsports.com/2009/02/minor-league-notes-1.html

O's Director of Player Development David Stockstill expects a healthy group of players to report to Sarasota. Only RHP Chorye Spoone is not completely healthy now after labrum surgery five months ago. He's not expected to pitch in any games until June.

I've seen video of Spoone and his mechanics look better than most to me. Pitchers get hurt. That's the nature of the profession.

I've pitched with Spoone in the offseason. I just don't think his mechanics are any good. I believe I did some sort of brief outline of why I feel that way. If not, I guess I'll get on it.

    • If Houston wins, Texas wins and Toronto loses: Astros will be the No. 5 seed, playing Tampa Bay And Toronto would play Twins in wild card and if they win , we face them in ALDS    i think lol
    • You mean like how Witt Jr greatly improved his defense from 2022 to 2023 while in the majors?
    • I am in no hurry to promote Holliday or Mayo to the majors based on their defense.  I think they both have work to do in that areas. Their bats are ahead on their gloves IMO. Gunnar, Westburg, Ortiz and Mateo are a better fit defensively to begin 2024 IMO.   Mateo fits well as a UIF and possibly a backup CF.    So I am not that interested in Mateo's trade value at this point.   I am much more interested in Urias trade value.
    • So you think Elias when interviewed by JA just said “Oh trust me, we will figure it out?”   Or perhaps he was thoroughly prepared, presented his experience in detail and outlined his thoughts and plans and process to rebuild and beyond ?
    • The full AL playoff field is set, but uncertainty in the AL West and second/third WC seeding mean that there are still four possible teams we might face. By tonight it'll be down to two.  While it's still a pretty open question— who would you most want our ALDS opponent to be?  It's an interesting question as I think all four teams are really at similar levels right now.
    • I show Bradish needing 4-5 shutout innings to leap frog Sonny Gray's 2.79 ERA.    12 outs is 2.7948 which is about the worst round off to 2.79 there is. Unless the Red Sox accelerate golf course mode, I think 3 innings is about what he'll do today, but with nothing at stake in Game 162, I'm ready for the first time through the lineup to be over in 30-ish pitches, and then maybe they want him to do 40-50. We'll be fortunate if we can get one or two Bradish v. S. Gray October matchups to settle the competition for 2nd best year in the league.
    • Thinking of possible ways to get some of these Norfolk guys in the mix next year. I hope they sign Adley, Gunnar and some others long term, but my guess is the best we can hope for in the outfield is extending one of them - perhaps Mullins in center for the next 3-4 years.
