Tidbits from the caravan gossip: beat writers / coaches / players various news comments. Big shout out to my brother and nephew for the help.

1. PA just breathes and blinks and the team will go up for sale when he dies. It’ll be a long, arduous process though.

2. Elias & Rosenbaum have all the input on lineups. Hyde manages the players.

3. Holliday will start at 2nd on opening day and Mayo makes the team bc he’s playing RF too.

4. Grod was very angry at FO by not making team. They had him change grip on slider and told him ST results didn’t matter bc he was going North.

5. They don’t like Kjerstad’s dad at all. Way too involved.

6. Good that Holmes is gone; and Flaherty hated by teammates;

7. they’ll definitely as some point get Cease;

8. they love Mateo for speed & D;

9. Ortiz, Norby, HK more likely to get traded;

10. Means will be a beast this yr;

11. players love new asst pitching coach;

12. will be difficult to extend Gunnar & Holliday bc of Boras;

13. Jordan Westburg is the one they think most highly of (by far) amongst Westburg/Ortiz/Norby and he thinks Westburg is the Opening Day 3B.

14.  DL Hall likely to be in the bullpen long term.

15. Urias most likely just to get cut (maybe traded for peanuts but not sure if anyone wants to trade even that).

16. Hyde is a players coach, potentially to a fault (as in, he thinks the players walk over him as evidenced by the paltry attendance amongst star players at the Caravans this year).

17.  Dean Kremer is most likely to fade out, particularly if Tyler Wells can rebound.

18. Cole Irvin was one of the nicest guys but was fully expecting to be non-tendered and was shocked the Orioles gave him $2M but still might not make the team.

Hello, sorry I had a typo in my notes.  Kjerstad defense is what they do not like.   So sorry goes out to his dad.  My bad! My apologies!

#3 and 10 would be great!

#5 about HK’s dad is strange.  What’s the context?

#8 about Mateo would be disappointing.  Their metrics and roster build goals are different than my fantasy management experience dictates.

#5 is wrong— my notes were abbreviated.  It is his defense they do not like.  Not his dad.  My apologies!

So what does “way too involved” mean in the context of his defense?

It means he got caught making stuff up but forgot to account for “way too involved” when amending his story.

Or HK’s dad called him up personally and told him to retract that statement or else. :D

Think I remember seeing a quote somewhere where Hicks said he really wanted to go somewhere where he would get playing time.  I'm sure Elias wouldn't guarantee him that here.  Maybe LAA did?

Apparently he's got family in California.  https://fanrumor.com/aaron-hicks-shares-reasons-for-joining-angels-clarifies-statements-on-everyday-outfield-role/?utm_source=baltimore-orioles&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=mlb-mk&fbclid=IwAR1Xh8xsBejFJp2Ru9b3I9REpk6DV1L_MDciLD_y5Spcyg1TeAuppJwHrYI

Looks like we've yielded or been beaten by the Rays for Phil Maton.

Luhnow's Astros invested Myles Straw to have him be one of their middle relievers for 2021-2023.

Maton and Ryne Stanek were 9th/10th in Astros postseason innings those years.    They are I think some of the clearest recent examples of the kind of performers who still get to practice their craft in October at Kyle Gibson's expense.     Also low Saves totals and Arb-earning power.

Ryne Stanek is still out there.    Maton's 18.1 postseason innings of 0.49 ERA assisted by an unsustainable 100% LOB%.

I like Stanek. The FIP and HR were up and the Ks were down. Maybe we help a little with all that. Who knows. Solid track record though.

    • That would be pretty cool. Just do me a favor and please don't start the magic number thread in June next season.
    • There’s another accomplishment from 1983 I’d like to match.
    • I'm more of a Prime Number guy, I'm happy enough with 89. Round numbers are for suckers.   Pretty disheartening they haven't managed to reach that relatively meager goal in 40 years.
    • Still with a chance to do this for the first time since 1982-83. Would be one more nice accomplishment for this organization.
    • The weird thing about our bullpen is that they rarely blow leads.   They have a 69% save rate, 4th highest in baseball.  They make it scary, but generally, when they have the lead, they get the job done.   Where they are really bad is keeping games close when we’re down a run or two, last night being a classic example of that.   This year’s team has 32 comeback wins, compared to 48 last year.   Why is that?   Part of it is obviously on the offense, but part of it is that the bullpen doesn’t keep us in striking distance when we’re behind.   One way you can tell this is by the W/L records of the starters and the bullpen.  Last year, the starters were 57-40, this year they’re 60-49.   The starter got the decision 12 more times this year than last year, including 9 more losses (with 3 games to play).   That tells you that when the team is losing when the starter is pulled, they keep losing.  Meanwhile, the relievers were 44-21 last year, 28-22 now. They’re not picking up wins because they don’t give the offense a chance to catch up and get the win for the bullpen guy.
    • I do not disagree with above posts.  Also I am pretty sure that this time last season, the Texas Rangers Hangout was saying the exact same things as the Rangers Pen.  Point being, you never know until you know.  The pen is shaky, but is capable of putting together a solid run from time to time.
