Puck News: Orioles sold to Rubenstein

Heard on MLB Network a little bit ago that approval of this sale would be discussed at the owner's meeting next week.

None of us have any idea where this process is. The sale could get approved on Tuesday, then Snell and Montgomery are O's on Thursday.

I doubt we’ll hear anything from MASN until that happens

This is good/fair analysis and I agree with all of it, but I think the hope is that ME won't have to stamp his seal of approval from a value perspective if ownership is willing to write some checks. That way, Elias and Sig can focus on how a guy will perform, not his dollar value.

Yeah, but you always have to consider performance vs. dollar value. Even if Rubenstein is willing to throw some cash around Elias is going to have input on whether it’s a good deal.

There’s just a lot of factors - how good the team is right now, how low the payroll and future commitments are right now, the need only being for SP, the lack of SP available in trade, and the potential sudden influx of current payroll expansion - where maybe it makes sense financially even from Elias/Sig’s perspective to sign a SP to an “overpay” deal that’s otherwise outside their normal approach.

I haven’t seen any articles say anything one way or the other in terms of timeline

The MLBTR article has Connolly reporting that the owners will discuss the sale agreement at a previously scheduled owners meeting next week.

Adley, Gunnar, Holliday, Basallo, Mayo, Rodriguez, Bradish...and Elias.

In a perfect world, even with rich owners, do we really think the O's will be able to extend them all? The Braves kind of did, but their future payrolls are really high.

Not to mention the new talent acquired through trades or free agency. Two days ago I had no interest in Woodruff. One year deals aren't for me. Now I could see a Glasnow type of trade/sign deal. Suddenly there's more options than Cease, or we could do a Glasnow type of deal with him.

For the first time in years, the O's will be open for real business. This will be fun.

It's wild to me how many people are out here - as Orioles fans having lived through Orioles things - assuming a) this sale will be quick, b) it will have an impact on this offseason, c) it means players will get extended, d) it means the payroll is going back to the $150 range, etc.

Maybe all those things happen and we all live happily ever after. But come on folks. I'm surprised at how many of us are willingly setting ourselves up for disappointment at this early stage. Before we even know anything, really.

Are you trying to say we are not getting Snell and Montgomery and Cease and the Elias, Adley, Gunnar and Jackson extensions before pitchers report?

Pessimist!

While this is true and I agree with the premise, Elias' calculus concerning value will almost assuredly change with a much more robust/healthy budget to spend from. When you are at the poverty line (Angelos' budget) EVERYTHING that you do/spend is on the absolute essentials. But when you have more discretionary means, you have way more options that you can consider such as luxury items that you wouldn't have dreamed of before.

Lol for real.

Like, if the sale gets approved before Opening Day, I will find that to be a minor miracle and that will be plenty for me to call the offseason a success. Assuming (there's that word again) that Elias and crew stay put and things continue relatively as normal. I will hope for more payroll flexibility in the future, but I sure as hell will not be assuming that.

New ownership could come in here and wreck shop, we have no idea. I'm cautiously optimistic, with the heaviest possible emphasis on 'cautiously'.

I’d settle for one quality starting pitcher. The contract extensions can be worked out over spring training.

Seriously-the approval process for the WFT took~4 months with an owner maybe more hated by his peers than Angelos and a prospective owner that already had a great track record in the NBA and NHL.  Perhaps this was known and fast-tracked but it takes a while to research not only Rubenstien but other partners then to prepare a dossier on them.

No. Absolutely not. But with the system/eye for developing talent that Elias/Syg have created, you don't have to. Because outside of the very top of the top guys (Gunnar, Holliday, maybe Adley? Basallo?) you can replace the rest with other talent that you acquire/develop. But yes Elias is a must to retain.
