The pick is really a pick swap to 2025, because we're pretty much guaranteed to tender him a QO.  Really light package for a TOR starter, even if for only a year.  If we manage to extend him... even better.

Absolutely not.  He's 29 and his numbers declined slightly last year.  Love this move for a year but there is no need to lock into something like that now.  This was a perfect situation to use a prospect surplus and grab a legitimate ace to bolster the team for a year.  Our core will still be coming from the minors.

Burnes is approaching his final season of arbitration eligibility and is slated to become a free agent after 2024. Without a long-term deal in place, the Brewers opted to trade their ace rather than risk losing him for nothing in return next offseason.
