It's not very well known, but the whole reason Mickey Mantle was good was the 11 years he spent secretly playing for a barnstorming team based out of Cape Charles, Virginia from ages 8-19.

Especially impressive considering the commute from Commerce, OK.

Wow, that's wild.  Love Cape Charles.

Yes, in 1939 Mickey Mantle was playing alongside 34-year-old barnstormers at the age of eight in a tiny village on Virginia's Eastern Shore just to get the mythical developmental advantage of the cool, moist sea air, while having a doppelganger attend grade school in Commerce, Oklahoma. 100% true.

Yea, I had to look up his Wikipedia page to realize I was an idiot.

The deepest Mantle family secret: Mickey had an identical twin they kept locked in the tornado cellar as a backup. They pulled out Rickey Mantle to go school in Mickey's place whilst he was barnstorming.

Holliday needs to start playing with the A team soon.  Wong seems to be the favorite to head north right now.

Starting road games is actually a better test, since other teams don’t bring their A team to Sarasota.

It’s also an at bats thing. He’s one of the team leaders in spring at bats. Taking a nice, long look him.

Of course, Tyler Nevin is also among the at bats leaders.  But, Elias is doing what he said he would do.  Nobody’s going to say that Holliday didn’t get enough looks.
