Corbin Burnes 2024

Corbin Burnes is most likely going to “like/love” which ever team ponies up the most cash.

I think most people would be the same way.

If a competing business would offer me a 20% raise to jump ship I'd have my two weeks in tomorrow.

I agree. And I don’t blame any ball player for maximizing their earning potential. I was just stating the obvious because the poster made it sound like if Burnes “liked” being around the team enough that it would persuade him to resign. When the reality is, like most people the paycheck will determine the place.

I'm sure there will be a large number of factors in play, some more prominently than others.

We of course don't even know if the Orioles are interested in retaining his services.

Particularly if it is the exact same job with the exact same benefits. No other factors to consider really.

We had a guy go to the Secret Service from our dept. for about double his salary. He was back in 8 months. We've had dozens and dozens of laterals to the NYSP and other agencies who all paid significantly more and have come back. The grass, as they say, isn't always greener.

I agree with this. The unfortunate part of that is it typically takes leaving to figure that part out. Most of us lack that ability to “recognize what we have” and resist the other.

With all that being said, I’m not sure that concept necessarily applies here. He could certainly move on, get the bag, and land in a place with good people and good opportunity.

I think there are some similarities. In this day and age, cops can pretty much lateral to any dept in the country due to shortages everywhere. The guys you work with can be stand-up dudes, it's command staff that usually makes the job suck for its officers, and much like a clubhouse you can have a bad squad.

Burnes won't have 30 options during the offseason, I suspect. He probably has 5 or 6 teams who would possibly pay what he's asking for.

I think there see plenty of guys who will stay with a contending team they like if the money is close.   But Burnes clearly intends to test the market.   No significant home team discount is coming, and it just takes one team to offer something crazy to knock us out of the picture unless we’re just being stupid.

More Corbin Burnes day please. 19 whiffs yesterday for Burnes with curveball generating 5 whiffs (on just 7 swings) and slider generating 7 whiffs (on just 8 swings).  Definitely the best his breaking stuff has looked all year.  Key was starting in zone and dropping out, whereas Burnes had been burying too many into the dirt and not starting the pitches competitively within the zone.  Palmer has mentioned Burnes preference to stay away/away with most offerings, but yesterday Burnes finally seemed to vary location at least a little bit and pitched to more quadrants (sprinkled sinkers in to RHs and cutters in to LHs).  To me that is what made offspeed more effective instead of hitters staying back and looking away/away.

Good news is the Yankees will be bidding on Gerrit Cole depending on injury. He has a opt out this offseason.

Topped out at 98 mph yesterday BTW.  I didn’t know he had that level of gas in him.  Really, everything was working.  Really the only negative was that he threw 40+ pitches in the first two innings and that kept him from staying out there for the 7th inning.  But I’ll take 23 more starts exactly like that one.

And he gets out of the second a lot quicker if Mountcastle makes that play.

Yes, but some stuff that happened later in the inning was self-inflicted.  Walking Dylan Moore, hanging a pitch to Urias who was hitting like .150.   But, I don’t want to dwell on the minor blemishes in a stellar outing.

    • HEY YANKEES! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnxNRPy_SOA
    • Yeah I'm all for sportsmanship but seeing 'Congratulations Yankees' at or near the top of the board is sickening, not gonna lie.  There is no high road when it comes to these clowns.  Boone's constant whining, the well-documented HP ump favoritism (I don't care if its framing or whatever, its happening, and its annoying AF), the whining about Judge getting hit on the hand while their guys constantly pitch inside including of course the Kjerstad play where they were literally cutting up on the bench as he lay prone on home plate, the ginormous payroll, the incredibly entitled fan base booing at pitches being called balls that are three inches off the plate, that stupid roll call, that stupid whistle after strikeouts, the stupid national media drooling over a Judge v Ohtani WS possibility, Nestor Cortes and his dumb mustache, the mediocre stadium that is revered simply because its called Yankee Stadium, the ridiculously short RF porch, the Soto Shuffle or whatever the hell it is. Congratulations my ass.  Screw those dudes.
    • Here's the deal. I doubt anyone on the Yankee's board congradulated us last year. This year they won the East. Whippie for them. It's like saying the IRS won tax season. IF, we do anything in the playoffs, we may meet again. But there are some significant hurdles before that. And they could easily lose along the way. Cleveland, Houston, Detroit, and KC are no walk in the park. I'll root for the O's to go as far as they can and that the Yankees are one and done. We are in. I hope we win one more so we play the opening round in Oriole Park. If not, we are still in and have to do what we got to do to go anywhere. Two years in a row. While the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Tampa sleep. Year two with a heck of a lot more obstacles. This may not be a WS year but we are competitive, young, and a hell of a lot classier than that bunch in the Bronx.
    • The usage of Cano last night was poor, I don't even blame him really.  Yankees had 9-1-2 coming up, and Torres is well known (based on the telecast) to hit Cano well, and hit sinkers well.  He laced that hit to RF off him on Tuesday where the Yanks screwed up the baserunning.  And Soto got a hit off him that same inning.  So it was pretty predictable that these guys were going to tee off when he came in, and that's exactly what happened. Not to mention he's pitched a lot recently, and Burnes should have pitched another inning anyway.  Just baffling decisions by Hyde last night, and I'm not one to generally question those types of things.  Even if the Burnes thing was pre-ordained, the choice of Cano for that moment was terrible.
    • Why is this thread on the Oriole Talk section.    It probably does not belong on the OriolesHangout  at all but if it stays it should be on the MLB section.
    • If there's two outs and its not Judge in the hole, I'm probably going with Perez, crossing my fingers he gets the lefty, and then starting fresh the next inning with Coulombe or someone else.  If there's one out, I'm going w/ Coulombe.
