The guy K’d 5 and BB’d 3 against a weak, non-contending offense, coming off a game vs the worst team in the league allowing 3 R on 7 H & 2 BB over 6 IP, and we’re now ready to open up the checkbooks for a blockbuster deal?

I know what you’re saying, it does feel like he has somewhat underperformed so far this year…….…

………and his ERA is 2.35, and no more than 3ER in any game, and you have a chance to win every game he pitches. This is an ACE in 2024, so yeah, peeps are ready to pay the man his money. A 5 year period where you can go Burnes, Bradish, GRod in the playoffs would be pretty sweet.

I think Burnes gets 5 days rest because of the off day tomorrow so it seems like a good spot to push him a little.  He only threw 107, so its not like we went Dusty Baker on him.

I mentioned that I think Hyde has to manage our starters a little less delicately with our bullpen sucking.  It looks Hyde is inclined to agree with this.

He got the right opportunity. 88 pitches going into the 7th.  Gotta stick with your starter there if he’s throwing well.  Last year Burnes threw 107 or more 5 times, and 100+ pitches 11 times.  He threw 88 or fewer 4 times.

The game state also helped Burnes get the 88-107 rope...I believe a closer score would have been more aggressively bullpened.

As we start the 30 games in 31 days (I'm mentally reclassifying May 31st as June 0th for the quirk), the bats can provide the staff a little help by providing some cruise control scenarios.

Does anyone think it’s possible that Corbin Burnes selected McCann to be his catcher? Last 2 games have been against RHP and McCann has started.

Yes, likely for his defense.

Loved him going 7 and 100+. It's nice to have a guy Hyde feels comfortable doing that with.

Burnes is starting to look more dominant now. 2.35 ERA and most of his numbers are trending better than 2023 with exception of the K-rate.

He was pretty adamant that he was going to pursue FA after going through arb before 2023. He was on Foul Territory a day or 2 after he was traded to the O's and he wasn't as adamant. He did say as of that moment he still wanted to be a FA, but he said things could change.

Here's a clip that starts with AJ asking him about it.

They really need to sell him on about staying with us , the teammates, the fans, the community, etc.  If Mr Ruby succeeds signing Burnes ?  That would be a statement to the rest of baseball world

Not if it costs us being able to sign Gunnar.

Yea I'd start with a Gunnar extension as priority #1, although you may need to get Adley first in the formality of it. We don't know what the payroll plan is. Would love it to dish out a Burnes extension but there's really no way to know if that would change the outlook for other money spent. It's not my money though, go ahead and throw that bag out there.

You have a good point there.  If they feel/believe they can’t afford both of them onto team payroll, then they might as well prepare the Qualified Offer paperwork . Then recoup the compensation draft pick next year

I hope our new owner is willing to spend what's necessary to keep us a contender long term. Including signing Burnes.

I guess people just expected 7-9 innings, 1-2 runs from him every start or something. His ERA is a full run lower than last year's, his FIP is 0.80 lower (for those who give a **** about that awful stat), his walk rate is lower, and his HR rate is lower. So he's actually overperformed if anything. People just had unrealistic expectations, but so far Burnes has pretty much met them for everyone not named DirtyBird.

I’d say Burnes has been more consistent but less spectacular at his best than I expected.  He literally hasn’t had a truly bad day, has never had an early exit, and he’s been very good the vast majority of the time.  He’s literally given his team a chance to win every time he’s taken the ball.  But he hasn’t gotten past 6 innings as often as I might have expected, and he hasn’t had many outings that have blown me away.

On balance, though, we’ve gotten everything we paid for and more.

    • HEY YANKEES! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnxNRPy_SOA
    • Yeah I'm all for sportsmanship but seeing 'Congratulations Yankees' at or near the top of the board is sickening, not gonna lie.  There is no high road when it comes to these clowns.  Boone's constant whining, the well-documented HP ump favoritism (I don't care if its framing or whatever, its happening, and its annoying AF), the whining about Judge getting hit on the hand while their guys constantly pitch inside including of course the Kjerstad play where they were literally cutting up on the bench as he lay prone on home plate, the ginormous payroll, the incredibly entitled fan base booing at pitches being called balls that are three inches off the plate, that stupid roll call, that stupid whistle after strikeouts, the stupid national media drooling over a Judge v Ohtani WS possibility, Nestor Cortes and his dumb mustache, the mediocre stadium that is revered simply because its called Yankee Stadium, the ridiculously short RF porch, the Soto Shuffle or whatever the hell it is. Congratulations my ass.  Screw those dudes.
    • Here's the deal. I doubt anyone on the Yankee's board congradulated us last year. This year they won the East. Whippie for them. It's like saying the IRS won tax season. IF, we do anything in the playoffs, we may meet again. But there are some significant hurdles before that. And they could easily lose along the way. Cleveland, Houston, Detroit, and KC are no walk in the park. I'll root for the O's to go as far as they can and that the Yankees are one and done. We are in. I hope we win one more so we play the opening round in Oriole Park. If not, we are still in and have to do what we got to do to go anywhere. Two years in a row. While the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Tampa sleep. Year two with a heck of a lot more obstacles. This may not be a WS year but we are competitive, young, and a hell of a lot classier than that bunch in the Bronx.
    • The usage of Cano last night was poor, I don't even blame him really.  Yankees had 9-1-2 coming up, and Torres is well known (based on the telecast) to hit Cano well, and hit sinkers well.  He laced that hit to RF off him on Tuesday where the Yanks screwed up the baserunning.  And Soto got a hit off him that same inning.  So it was pretty predictable that these guys were going to tee off when he came in, and that's exactly what happened. Not to mention he's pitched a lot recently, and Burnes should have pitched another inning anyway.  Just baffling decisions by Hyde last night, and I'm not one to generally question those types of things.  Even if the Burnes thing was pre-ordained, the choice of Cano for that moment was terrible.
    • Why is this thread on the Oriole Talk section.    It probably does not belong on the OriolesHangout  at all but if it stays it should be on the MLB section.
    • If there's two outs and its not Judge in the hole, I'm probably going with Perez, crossing my fingers he gets the lefty, and then starting fresh the next inning with Coulombe or someone else.  If there's one out, I'm going w/ Coulombe.
