He missed 7 bats last night. A guy with his stuff throws 99 pitches and misses just 7 bats, against a high K team?  Thats a really crazy stat to me.

Compared to his first couple starts where he K'd everyone he's not missing as many bats but he's also not getting hit hard.  His first 3 starts he had a K rate of 28, but an average EV of 90.3 with a 13 degree LA.  Since then he's had a K rate of 23, but his average EV allowed has dropped to 85.9 with an 8 degree LA.  As a result his xwOBA and xERA are really good.

EV allowed is a weird stat where medium sized samples of 40-100 batted balls is actually more predictive than large samples, but that does make it valuable in looking at splits.

The whiff/K rates are definitely worth taking a look at, but as long as he's not walking anyone and giving up 85 mph grounders and weak flies when he does give up contact, it's definitely not a serious concern.

I also wonder if he's intentionally pitching to contact because he can get away with it, and because he is trying to keep his pitch count manageable rather than give the ball up to our shaky bullpen.

My concern isn’t now as much as it is in the playoffs. I don’t want some pitch to contact version of Burnes out there.

Im not saying that will happen and I don’t think it will happen but there have been too many low Ks, low missed bats starts for me early on…I don’t want that to become a trend all season long and into October.

Yeah, I get that.  His next 3 starts are going to be against the Rays, Phillies, and Yankees.  The second 2 should be pretty telling regarding how he performs against better bats, or whether he has another gear he can turn on.

In general I feel like his breaking pitches have been a little wild and it's causing him to miss out on some swings and misses.  Hopefully he finds his curveball at some point during the season.

If he finds his curveball he could get a no-hitter.  His cutter command has been unbelievable.

His xERA is 2.73.  His FIP is 3.16.  Not everyone can be as good as Jack Flaherty.  :)  I am not sure what more you could want of him.  He is a very smart pitcher who has an obvious plan.  Listen to any interview with him and it's obvious that he has a plan. I am sure all of this is by design in conjunction with the Orioles.

On Flaherty, I wonder if he is taking what the Orioles worked on with him and implementing it.   Maybe the Orioles should have had the chutzpah to stick with him.

I think it’s pretty clear what I want out of him.  I want the dominant starter that misses bats and gets lots of Ks.

That’s usually the best way to get outs in the playoffs.  Pitching to contact is not normally what you want, especially when you face the best lineups.

I don't think the 2 Jays starts are a great barometer, they strike out less than anyone in the league and Burnes throws a lot of strikes. They never really hurt him, but they don't strike out.

I happened to see Tigers GM Scott Harris on MLB Now about a week ago, and he seemed to pimp it out POBO style describing "the latent talent" his people thought they could unlock.

We get more than our 54% here in this era, but nobody gets 100%.

Since that interview they've also had to demote their 1-1 Spencer Torkelson years into his career, so there is that.

Trade deadlines so far, Jack Flaherty is the one starter Elias has beaten the competition on.

Aren’t you generalizing a bit?  Sure Maddux wasn’t great in the playoffs but Kershaw hasn’t been either and he strikes out tons of guys.  Pedro struck out tons and was not great in the playoffs.  Palmer was good in the playoffs and wasn’t a strike out guy. Glavine was a good playoffs pitcher.  Seems the most important hung is to be capable of striking out guys if necessary.  Burnes seems to still have that ability.

If he recognized the latent talent he was stupid to only sign him to a one year deal.

With the uncertainty of Bradish, I see a lot of people calling for signing Burnes to an extension no matter what the cost - I'd have no problem with that (it's not my money).  However, it COULD be in the O's best interest to let him test the market.  With the sheer number of pitchers going down with UCL injuries, teams might be afraid to risk $300mm on an arm.  Might not be as many bidding wars as in the past.

Huh, you’d think the Jays would be near the top of the league in runs scored then, using SG logic.

No im not and citing a few examples here and there doesn’t change simple math and what usually works.

Agreed I just cited a few examples.  Do you have something more concrete?

    • Soto and Judge are both first ballot Hall of Famers when they retire.  Soto is younger than Adley, has a career bWAR over 36, and dominated the 2019 postseason as a 21 year old. Folks probably weren't paying much attention to him or the Nats back then, but he has been a force ever since being called up in 2018. And Judge...not sure why nobody else saw value in a six and a half foot man with a ton of raw power, but good for them for nailing that 32nd pick in the draft. Having these guys 2 and 3 in the lineup is such a game changer, because there is so much pressure on the opposing pitchers to not screw up with any of their other 7 hitters.  One guy you may be able to get around.  But 2.....much harder.   That being said, I do think it is more about us losing the division than anything else.  Tampa showed us last year how to keep fighting in spite of injuries. Those guys were decimated and were like a relentless swarm of bees hanging around us all the way until the last weekend.  They won 99 games with an extremely depleted pitching staff and a slew of no-name hitters who kept coming up with big hits.  We lost this division by playing uninspired, unclutch, and lame baseball for three full months.  And amazingly, we will have gone all of July, all of August, and all of September without so much as a 4 game winning streak.   Winning the season series against every division opponent for the second year in a row is something I am very happy about after years of being a doormat. I am sorry we couldn't win the division, but I am also glad to be playing next week and not sitting at home waiting to play a team on a high after winning a playoff series.
    • It's game 160 tonight and we just discovered our bull pen has warts? Elias's fault, Hyde's fault - we've had ample threads of he sucks, they suck, fire him, demote him, etc.  Well we are off to the playoffs and the pen may be the reason we don't go far. And if so I doubt few on here will be surprised. It is what it is going forward with some but not necessarily significant adjustments. We play this year out with the hand we can put together - next Monday. Till then, just win one in Minnasota for the bottom line. Last night is over and IMO really didn't teach us anything we didn't already know.
    • I didn't spell it out well enough.    I was meaning season long results of Orioles teams with full Rutschman seasons 2023-2027 against the Yankees.    They are now 1-1.
    • HEY YANKEES! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnxNRPy_SOA
    • Yeah I'm all for sportsmanship but seeing 'Congratulations Yankees' at or near the top of the board is sickening, not gonna lie.  There is no high road when it comes to these clowns.  Boone's constant whining, the well-documented HP ump favoritism (I don't care if its framing or whatever, its happening, and its annoying AF), the whining about Judge getting hit on the hand while their guys constantly pitch inside including of course the Kjerstad play where they were literally cutting up on the bench as he lay prone on home plate, the ginormous payroll, the incredibly entitled fan base booing at pitches being called balls that are three inches off the plate, that stupid roll call, that stupid whistle after strikeouts, the stupid national media drooling over a Judge v Ohtani WS possibility, Nestor Cortes and his dumb mustache, the mediocre stadium that is revered simply because its called Yankee Stadium, the ridiculously short RF porch, the Soto Shuffle or whatever the hell it is. Congratulations my ass.  Screw those dudes.
    • Here's the deal. I doubt anyone on the Yankee's board congradulated us last year. This year they won the East. Whippie for them. It's like saying the IRS won tax season. IF, we do anything in the playoffs, we may meet again. But there are some significant hurdles before that. And they could easily lose along the way. Cleveland, Houston, Detroit, and KC are no walk in the park. I'll root for the O's to go as far as they can and that the Yankees are one and done. We are in. I hope we win one more so we play the opening round in Oriole Park. If not, we are still in and have to do what we got to do to go anywhere. Two years in a row. While the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Tampa sleep. Year two with a heck of a lot more obstacles. This may not be a WS year but we are competitive, young, and a hell of a lot classier than that bunch in the Bronx.
    • The usage of Cano last night was poor, I don't even blame him really.  Yankees had 9-1-2 coming up, and Torres is well known (based on the telecast) to hit Cano well, and hit sinkers well.  He laced that hit to RF off him on Tuesday where the Yanks screwed up the baserunning.  And Soto got a hit off him that same inning.  So it was pretty predictable that these guys were going to tee off when he came in, and that's exactly what happened. Not to mention he's pitched a lot recently, and Burnes should have pitched another inning anyway.  Just baffling decisions by Hyde last night, and I'm not one to generally question those types of things.  Even if the Burnes thing was pre-ordained, the choice of Cano for that moment was terrible.
