Austin Hays 2024

Looking for bright spots from today’s game, Hays hit three balls on the screws, 102, 104 and 106, two of which went for hits.  His BA is creeping towards the Mendoza line, now at .190. He’s hitting .294 since coming off the IL.

And he was flashing some wheels too, stretching into a 2B and also cutting off balls in the field, making competitive throws trying to get runners.

Good for Hays.  That’s great.

You could see this brewing over the weekend.

If he starts to hit and Urias is going to keep hitting, it really helps the lineup.

Of course, they may end up hurting Stowers even though he is hitting.

Just need Mullins to start hitting again. A four man outfield of Mullins, Hays, Cowser and Santander could be pretty good now that Hays is breaking out of his slump.

I am curious to see what they do with Mayo when he gets healthy.

I like his comments.  I thought they were spot on and he wasn’t making excuses.  Hopefully, he and Ced get it together.

Oh well, now we have the excuses.  Great game but please.

Hays on staying patient/confident when he wasn't hitting: "As I've said, before I got hurt and hurt my calf, that was a rough 30 at-bats or so. I started swinging the bat pretty good, hitting the ball hard and then I got hurt. I had time to put my strength and size back on that I had lost when I got sick towards the end of spring training. I really started feeling like myself and now I am able to drive the ball like I was before I lost that weight. So I'm feeling good."

Doesn’t bother me.  It was obvious that Hays wasn’t at full strength in April.  His EV’s were extraordinarily low even when he made good contact.  But I’m more interested in how he does from here than what the reasons were for his poor start.  He still has a long way to go.

I believe the reasoning. His health has been the issue his entire career, and he's only 28. I don't want him playing every day for both health and production reasons but I think it's a little soon to just say his career is done.

I don’t think it was an excuse.  You can look at Hayes career and it seems during most of his downturns in performance he was hurt.  When he had been healthy he has been a pretty good hitter.  The problem is he gets hurt a lot.

He looks like a completely different guy from a month ago.   Stronger, faster, quicker.  I had just about written him off, but he looks like a new man.  We never know what’s really going on behind the scenes.  I’m happy for Hays, easy guy to pull for.  If he does well it just pushes the other guys to get better.  I love it.
