I saw a decent amount of 94-96s in the outing I saw. Still, too many guys seems to barrel up his fastball.

Could he have focused solely on rehabbing instead of working with the development staff to refine his pitch movement and shape?

Do we know how his fastball movement was pre injury?

I was never a huge fan of his fastball in video I saw him before the injury. For a guy who throws mid-90's, he always seemed to get barreled up a little too much for my liking. I think he may need to go to a sinker or cutter more than his 4-seamer.

Johnson had his fourth consecutive good start today, 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 8 K’s.  He’s allowed 2 ER in 17 IP in the four starts, lowering his ERA to 3.03.   They are still being careful with his innings.

He has to be getting close to getting bumped up.  I expect by mid June he is moved up.

That’s the kind of start that gets my attention.  8 K in 4 IP.   Hope he can continue to miss bats.

And on only 67 pitches. While not super efficient, high strikeout games sometimes lead to overly high pitch counts. 8ks while averaging 17 pitches an innings isn’t terrible.

Shhhh, don’t let Sports Guy hear you.

67 pitches in 4 IP is adequate.  I liked Brandon Young’s 6 IP on 75 pitches a little better.   But Johnson is starting to show why he was seen as the lead piece of the Mancini trade even while slated for TJ surgery.

Povich, McDermott, Young and Tavera in AAA. Johnson, Bright, Brnovich, Weston pitching well in AA. The upper minors pitching prospects look a lot deeper now than they have in recent years.

With all the interesting upper minors arms comes impending 40-man decisions, and also more depth to deal from ahead of the deadline - hopefully enough to be able to steer trade partners away from the best few names when we need to add pitchers as secondary pieces to a deal.

Johnson is definitely a potential trade candidate if they are trying to keep Povich/McDermott/De Leon out of a deal, if he pitches well the next couple months he could easily be the next best pitching prospect in the system. Of course would like to hold onto everybody, but we’re going to make some kind of trade and teams always look for pitching back.

Any word on his stuff recently? I know he was up to 97 before injury and 92-94 to start the year.

I only saw highlights and the announcer called one pitch 95.

I hate to trade pitching when we need pitching.  I'd rather trade a veteran hitter instead. If those prospect pitchers are good, why would we need to trade for someone else's pitchers?
