Adley Rutschman 2024

Some interesting and interrelated Adley splits:

As C (38 games): .671 OPS

As DH (21 games): 1.115 OPS

Vs. RH starter* (39 games): .700 OPS

Vs. LH starter* (18 games): 1.133 OPS

Vs. RHP: .664 GPS

Vs. LHP: 1.183 OPS

[*The Vs. LH/RH starter splits shown on BB-ref include all at bats a player had when a LH/RH pitcher started the game, not just the at bats against the starting pitcher.  So, if a RH starter was followed by a LH reliever, the at bats against the reliever are included in that split.]

So, is Adley crushing LHP because he’s mostly playing DH when he faces them and doesn’t have to worry about his defensive responsibilities, or is he crushing when he plays DH  because he’s mostly facing LHP?

Adley has hit better as DH all three years, even when his platoon splits were in the opposite direction in 2022.   But this year, his DH/C splits and R/L splits are more pronounced than before.

I tend to think it's more about him just being randomly better as a RHH this year than it is about not catching. But that's just me, and it could be the opposite, or a combination. But switch-hitters can have some weird variances.

McCann's 2023 and 2024 splits favor RHP (maybe an aging thing is his career splits).  Maybe Adley can get his breaks vs. RHP.

It's pretty safe to assume all variances in small samples of plate appearances are just random noise unless you have really good evidence otherwise. And unless you're talking some very specific metrics like K rate or GB/FB rate 40 games is a small sample. OBP and SLG take 100s of at bats to reach significance, and batting average over a full season's worth of PAs.

That OPS be righties is going up. It was in the 650-675 range not that long ago.

So Adley had a 6 RBI day featuring a grand slam, 3 separate RBI at bats including ones from both sides of the plate, and nobody bumped his thread until now?   Ho hum, it’s Adley.

Asking for a friend: if you have a catcher who is batting .306 and is on pace for 33 homers and 124 RBI, is that good?  Inquiring minds want to know!

Agree.  He has been amazing.  Not just great. Spectacular.

What a great person to have as the leader of the O's.  Just outstanding.

Is Adley good ?  Let’s just say I’m excited he’s on our team . Ever since Adley came up for good in June 2022 , the Orioles stopped their losing culture.

If he had bounced a throw to 2nd, there would have been 2 pages minimum.

Also the catcher on pace for 33 HR/124 RBI, who a large percentage of posters here don't want to extend.

Most posters feel the FO can’t afford to pay both Gunnar and Adley long term contracts. They love Adley, but need to pick one to not sign.

He is cursed with consistency. When he performs well it isn't really news. In the game yesterday when he knocked in Gunnar the Rays announcers were gushing about the most special player in the game and for a second it wasn't clear to me that they were talking about Gunnar.

Hard to believe those numbers with his defense is worth only 2.5 WAR (around #30 in MLB). For what it's worth, he is leading all catchers.
