DCab to be the no. 3 starter for the Nats

According to local radio in DC, the Nats will announce today that DCab will be the no. 3 starter in the Nats' rotation.

Considering the mediocre performances of the various guys the O's are trotttng out this spring, I think there's a good chance we'l regret letting DCab go. 180 IP, 5.25 ERA may look real good to us later this year.

I disagree. Cabrera doesn't help this team move forward. I'd take Pauley or Bass over DCab because they throw strikes and have potential to improve somewhat, whereas DCab only regressed since 2005.
I highly doubt either Pauley or Bass will be even as good as Cabrera was last year.

:agree:

BBs are about the worst thing in baseball. Moving DCab, Olson, and Liz out of the rotation can only help it, if only marginally.

It was definitely a stupid decision to non-tender him. It was at the time and it still obviously looks dumb now.

I don't know. The O's invested over 800 innings pitched and $5M in Cabrera. He made $2.875M last season and will get $2.6M from the Nationals this year. I'm not sure he will be worth even that much, but he'd probably have gotten $2.8M to $3M in arbitration. Can't see why it was worth that much on the off chance a 28-year-old who has been getting worse the last couple of years would suddenly turn it around. If Cabrera is finally going to "see the light", I think the odds are a lot better for him in an entirely new organization.

Looking at the Nats spring training stats so far, it appears that their opening day rotation ought to be Zimmerman (12-1/3 IP, 0.00 ERA), Martis (8 IP, 1.13), Lannan (6 IP, 0.00), Cabrera (7-2/3 IP, 4.70), and Balester (11 IP, 6.00).

When did I say I thought Cabrera would "turn it around"?

I'd much rather have Cabrera for $3.5-4M, go 180-200 innings at a 5.00-5.25 ERA than have to deal with what we're gonna deal with out of our 4th-5th rotation spots this season.

He doesn't need to improve or turn it around to still be our 3rd or 4th best starter this year. I never said I want to sign him to a multi-year deal, but a 1-year commitment to Cabrera is undoubtedly a better option than what we're left with without him.

Y'all keep trotting out an expectation that Daniel will throw a 5.00-5.25 ERA, but I think that's unrealistic. His 2nd half numbers (actually June on... ) were worse than his early numbers last year, and 2008 was worse than the past few years.

Bottom line - I see no reason to expect that he'll even be as good as he's been. It's just as likely he'll be worse.

As bad as some of the tripe we might be sending to the mound this year, I won't be missing him.

I really do see your logic Mack, and I kinda wish we had as sure a thing (as "sure" a thing...) as Daniel slotted into our rotation about now, especially for the money we'd be paying him vs. what we're paying others. Still, I'm :happy dance: glad he's gone!

He was (is) clueless. A thrower. Couldn't field his position if his mother's life depended on it. Never moved the bat off his shoulder in interleague. All he gives you is (bad) innings.

I'd rather suffer with (any) different options til our cream is up, than to endure watching Daniel anymore. Personally, I liked the guy. He seemed to work hard as hell. He just sucks. Good riddance.

I didn't mean it to be mean. I know Daniel works VERY hard to be what he is... he just still sucks. :P No matter how hard he works. Some guys have it and some guys don't...
