If it were up to me, as of right now, none of the “older vet” bats would be on next years team..including Mounty.

I think you have to keep one of O’Hearn or Mounty.  Also, tough to not keep Mateo around as a fifth OF/IF

Maybe Mateo stays.  I honestly wasn’t thinking him but his salary could jump a little and he may have more value in trade.

As far as keeping OHearn or Mounty..it depends on if you trade any of the young guys and how far Basallo gets.

Say they actually keep Stowers and play him.  You have him, Cowser, Kjerstad, Mayo and eventually Basallo.

I would say you need a righty OFer but Hays is making more money than he should (or will be next year).  I would say the same about Mounty.

Thats why I said, as of today. That could change but let’s say you offer a QO to AS and he accepts.  That’s about 22M.  Add in the current vets and you are now pushing the payroll up 60ishM.  So, even if you say take away Santander, since he’s a FA, and keep the rest..that’s 38M. Say you say, take away Urias because you won’t keep Urias and Mateo..so now you are 34ishM.

That’s 37% of the payroll right now. Putting aside where you think the payroll should be, that’s a lot of money tied up in a group of players that just aren’t worth it especially when you have a laundry list of high level prospects/young players that cost you nothing and are likely better players…or at least they are more talented.

Due to age or cost? Mountcastle is only 27, is that now an "older vet" in baseball years?

Unless there's a trade offer that's too good to pass up, Mountcastle will be here next season, at least.  Have we any evidence that Mayo and/or Kjerstad can play a decent 1B?  Mounty has been very good defensively and this team could use his RHB, especially if most of the "older" guys, like Santander, Urias and Hays aren't here next season.  We'd only have Adley, Westburg and Mayo's rookie season, plus question marks like Mateo, Norby and maybe the backup C from the right side.  I can't see Elias adding an impact FA hitter either.

It’s just really risky to have such a good team and turn it over to all young guys.

By next year, some of these young guys will be on their third and fourth years.  They are fine.

And I’m not saying not have any vets but I’m not spending the money for the vets we have.  Trade them and get some prospects/other areas of need.

Why?

Are they all going to skip the game to go hang out behind the mall and vape?

Because the existing team is extremely good.  There’s a lot of downside.

But that doesn't have to do with the other guys being young.

You could say the same about adding vets.

There is also risk in keeping guys too long and having to deal with them suddenly putting up an OPS+ of 70 or even 58.

In a vacuum you can just say, hey let's just dump those guys, but in reality it isn't that easy.

Yes but it’s the potential drop off from the rookies vs vets too.  Have to carefully hedge.  We have had so many guys struggle when they first come up.
