Live Hotdog Races, brought to you by Berks

I was so excited to witness my first live hotdog race on Sunday. I even told my wife about it on the drive to the stadium. She wasn't that excited though.

I have to say, what a massive letdown. They barely even covered any distance. They started around the ground crew dugout and didn't even get to where the tarp is rolled up down the 1st base line. It had to be less than 20 yards.

And the race was terrible. I don't think there was a lead change or any bumping. It was all ketchup from gate to wire.

I believe they are doing a few more of these this season. I hope they can make the track much longer to allow for more action to occur within the race.

It’s also a ripoff of the Presidents’ race the Nats run at their games.   I prefer the video screen version of the hot dog race.

And, it’s a travesty that mustard doesn’t win every time.  It’s the Michael Phelps of hot dog condiments, let’s not pretend like it’s really a competition.

Yes. It is a cheap imitation. If you are going to copy and least make it a better product.

I believe sauerkraut would destroy mustard on most nights if they allowed it in the competition.

Al this stuff leaves me cold. If you want a real hot dog-related competition, how about a hot dog-eating contest, with each contestant using one of the condiments? Oh, wait -- I just remembered that I don't like to watch eating contests, either.

My curmudgeonly preference for between-innings entertainment would be video highlights of old games, not just Oriole games. Let the young fans see Mays, Musial, Aaron, Mantle, Boog, Brett, Brooks, Spahn, Marichal, Morgan, Flanagan, Stanhouse, Belanger, etc. Teams should be trying to sell baseball.  Maybe a quiz: Who was the two-time World Series winner you just saw?

I don't see how a bunch of guys running around in hot dog suits helps do that. Not that a guy in a hot dog suit can't be funny:

I guess I missed this tradition?? as a kid going to games. I don't remember this at all.

It sure does excite the crowd.

The presidents race was just a ripoff of the Brewers sausage race.
