Clay Holmes got walked off by the worst part of the KC batting order, maybe he's available as he's probably not good enough for the NYY.

Maybe they’ll take Mullins and Hays for him?

We could also dangle Urias!

I see that Stoudt made his professional debut in the 2022 season after recovering from TJ surgery.  In that short span of time he was pitching in the majors the following year - after a trade, being waived, and back to Seattle.  I know college pitchers move quickly, and he obviously earned to some extent his MLB debut and more very quickly, but that's a heck of quick road to travel after TJ.  I think this could be quite a nice acquisition.  He'll be in the hands of a good pitching development program (Kremer, Wells, Rodriguez, Bradish, Bautista) and I hope he'll have an option or 2.

If you got a live arm and two pitches you are pretty much ready for bullpen duty.

They'd probably do it to HS kids if the value of a starter wasn't so much higher.

I know we got Webb and Perez off waiver claims, but as Perez demonstrated today, at some point we have to make better acquisitions than waiver claims to fix this bullpen.

What are we fixing?  The bullpen isn’t broken it is very solid and has been most the year minus about a 10 game stretch.  Could we use another back end guy sure but that is more reinforcements than fixing something.

The Orioles bullpen.
Webb  1.05 whip 1.72 ERA

Suarez 1.05 whip 1.61 ERA

Cano 1.22 whip 2.37 ERA

Coulombe .62 whip 2.42 ERA

Kimbrell .95 whip 2.59 ERA

Tate 1.23 whip 2.45 ERA

Perez 1.13 whip 3.86 ERA

Aiken 1.19 whip 4.13 ERA.

They will add another high leverage guy to replace Aiken most likely and depending on Coulombe injury maybe another lefty but for everyone expecting a huge turnover you are gonna be disappointed because the guys we have are just as good as the guys who will be available.

4th. Blown save  that is more than Kimbrel and half the people here want to get rid of him I can’t imagine if Holmes was our closer.  Honestly if you look at the back ends performance ours is just as good as theirs but way people talk there’s is so great and ours is terrible.

The team would really benefit from a guy with a high K rate at the back of the pen, that's one thing for sure that needs fixing. Kimbrel is the only one we have who is a real strikeout pitcher but we need another without a doubt.

Can we trade this guy back to Seattle for Mike Baumann now?

(8 good appearances for Baumann in Seattle already) ...

Counting the blown save last night.  1-0 lead.  9th inning.   Seattle brings Mikey in to close. HR to Roberts.  Warning track to Vaughn.   Two 9th inning save situations in his last three games.   Two home runs.  Two blown saves.

Do they really though.   The talk around here is how the Yanks have such a great pen and we have a a pen that needs an overhaul to major fixing.  We need more strikeout guys like they have and power arms.   However if you look at the numbers they are very similar looking at the 6 high leverage guys.  Webb, Cano, Coulumbe, Perez, Tate and Kimbrel vs the Yanks Weaver, Hamilton, Marciano, Ferguson, Tonkin, and Holmes.  They have pitched about the same number of innings 154 us vs 157 them.  Our Era 2.47 there’s 2.69.  Strikeouts 159 them 153 us or .05 more per 9 innings. Walks is us 44 and them 52.  If you look at individual numbers it shows similarities most pitchers are in the high 8’s to 9 in k’s/9.  We do have Kimbrel at 12.6 but Tate just at 6.1 which evens it out to about that 9.

Do I think we need to strengthen the bullpen yes for sure an upgrade from Akin and Baker to another high leverage guy should happen but just do believe the thought that we need to overhaul and fix it completely.  The 6 i listed are not going anywhere unless they fall off drastically.  If Kremer comes back you probably see Suarez move back to another spot in pen taking Bakers spot.  That leaves 1 spot you try to upgrade that is what we probably do but people thinking we need an overhaul just have blinders on and not looking at data.  I see suggestions like Kopech because he strikes guys out or Scott but neither of those guys are actual upgrades.

Yes, we definitely need someone who can strike people out. The bullpen is full of guys with FIP's that are a run or more than their current ERAs, there will be a correction on some of them. Cano has a 2.37 ERA and a 4.27 FIP, he is not a late-inning arm despite the "success" he's had. They give up loud contact and while you can skate in a lot of games during the regular season, you need guys in the pen who can get outs without players putting the ball in play. Webb 1.76 (3.18), Tate 2.45 (3.74) and on and on. When Akin is your 3rd best strikeout pitcher and actually pitching to a FIP lower than Cano and Tate, etc, yeah, you probably should find a 10K/9 guy if you really intend to make a push in the playoffs.

If you feel comfortable putting Aiken and Baker (or even Tate) in during an elimination series, that's your prerogative. But I do not. Too inconsistent, which is the same reason why Mike Baumann pitched himself off the active roster. when spot was needed for returning starters off the IL. Currently Coulombe is on IL so we can't even count on one of our best. Cano has regressed from last season. We've also witnessed last season how Webb broke down from over use and was ineffective in the playoff series against Texas. Perez goes in streaks of either really good or concernedly bad (he loses his command).

Akin's problem is he leaves the ball over the heart of the plate and he doesn't have good enough stuff to get away with it. They're meatballs. We might get some good times from Baker now that he's up, but I would only expect a month or 2 at best from him before he returns to old habits. And Suarez is a starter who wants to be a starter. Who knows if he will go back to the bullpen? He'll have to go deeper into games if he wants to stay in the rotation, otherwise, I think he should be in the bullpen. But that's not what he is right now in this moment. He's a starter with a ERA in the 1s.

He is a starter filling in for an injury and 6 man rotation.  He won’t be a starter when Kremer comes back and we go to 5 man rotation.  He is the only guy that has started a game this season and not given you 6 innings at least 1 times.  That includes guys like Means, Wells, Povich Kremer & Irvin.  You can’t be a starter on a contending team and never go at least 6 innings, that is how you do wear out a bullpen having to get 10+ outs every turn through.

I mean, he's not a closer. That's on Seattle for trying to use him like that in a 1-0 game. He's a solid middle reliever, but shouldn't be overextended into high leverage like that.

They look like they already tinkered with his knuckle curve.  Not as much break but still sharp and he was actually pretty consistent with it.  It’s a SSS but his overall control looks much better with Seattle.

    • I have a feeling we’ll see a lot of the starters pulled mid-game.
    • I usually post the lyrics of Paul Simon’s Night Game on the last day of the season, but it doesn’t really fit for a team going to the playoffs.   So I’ll wait, and hopefully never have occasion to post it.
    • Yea I didn’t get this either.
    • Why pitch Suarez today instead of yesterday?   That makes no sense to me.
    • Please don’t compare OAA and dWAR.  OAA and dWAR are not comparable stats.  First of all, OAA is measured in outs, while dWAR is measured in wins.   That’s a very different scale.   Second, OAA is not adjusting for difficulty of position, while dWAR contains a significant adjustment for position.   Third, OAA measures range but doesn’t measure the throwing aspect of being an outfielder.   If you want to compare apples to apples (and I assume you do), Statcast has a statistic called Fielding Runs Value that converts OAA plus the throwing aspect into runs.   Cowser has a +10 FRV, which as the names implies, is measured in runs.  FRV feeds directly into the fWAR calculation, along with a factor that adjusts for difficulty of position, which for Cowser is measured at -4.1 runs.   Meanwhile, rWAR uses Defensive Runs Saved (DRS), which is directly comparable to FRV.  Cowser has a +3 DRS, not as good as his +10 FRV.   Those are the comparable stats, and the 7 run difference converts to about 0.7 WAR. That’s the main difference between Cowser’s 4.1 fWAR and 3.2 rWAR. I see that after Gil’s poor performance yesterday, Cowser now leads him in both rWAR (3.2 to 3.1) and fWAR (4.1 to 2.2).   So, I like Cowser’s chances.
    • I'm the opposite.  I don't want him sitting too much and getting into his own head.
    • Our key players aren't ready to uphold their part of the deal yet, but the Peak Orioles Teams sometime this decade against these Dodgers before they get too old would be an amazing matchup.      I've only gotten to watch most of a Dodgers game the past week or so, and one of the impressions even though they are HOF and still near the very best is that Freddie and Mookie are fraying some as time continues its unbeaten streak. I think we're the likeliest club of any of the 29 others to be able to out-talent the Dodgers anytime soon.
