You have a point unless Elias does not want to risk losing him.    Maybe they could have hand shake agreement to keep a roster spot open.

Because, we have a guy who was a fairly early draft pick and has been developed in the system and a guy who we traded Baumann for. Both would be league minimum. And Adley isn’t a rookie anymore.

Who was a fairly early draft pick?   We got whatever we could for Bauman instead of nothing.  McCann will be first choice if he's willing to accept their one year modest contract.

Handley was a 6th round pick and $250k signing. That is fairly early.

And you think the only offer for Baumann just happened to be a AAA catcher?

So, what does being a 6th round pick have to do with next year?   I think Seattle was one of the few teams offering anything for Baumann  and Hunt was the best we could do.   He has options so it was more about having depth down in Norfolk next year.

And Strowd’s AAA ERA performance doesn’t warrant it yet, but I’m still a believer in the stuff. By the end of the season I think he’ll have a spot.

If D. Johnson does not get called up this year they have an option on him next year.   I am guessing they may put him on the 40 man roster to add OF depth because he has been doing so well.   Really just a guess.

You may have a point on Davidson if he keeps doing well.

I want to give Santander the QO. I want the draft pick, but if he takes it I also think he is worth the $20M.

I like O'Hearn but he does only one thing well, which is hit RHP. Meanwhile, he is blocking Kjerstad outright and also complicates things for Mayo. 

Will we get to see what happens with Santander before making the call on O'Hearn's option? I would want O'Hearn back only if we are certain that Santander is gone. 

Anyway, we have already discussed most of the vets in other threads. Of the young guys on your "probably not protected" list, Pham is perhaps the most interesting to me. He has a high ERA this year and the walks are pretty bad, but the K's are improved. I could see a team taking a chance on him as a bullpen piece. If we lose Vespi, I could see Pham as a taxi squad guy.

Strowd has had a bad run of too many walks and loud contact in AAA, terrible BABIP and HR/FB. But he’s still missing bats at an elite rate. Strowd’s AAA z-Contact % is 69.5%. Mason Miller’s z-Contact % is 70.0%. Strowd’s got the type of arm that is long gone in the Rule 5 if not protected.

Baker did not pitch any games in the minors in 2022 which he would have if he was optioned.   His game log in 2022 does not show a break because of being optioned.

If you have a link that shows he was optioned in 2022 please post it.

My thread is really about who Elias may trade before the trade deadline at the end of July.

You’re right, he was not optioned in 2022, but he was first optioned September 8, 2021 by the Blue Jays. It’s in the extra rows of latest transactions on his player page: https://www.mlb.com/player/bryan-baker-641329

I use the Roster Resource page on Fangraphs, which shows he’s on his last option this year: https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/depth-charts/orioles

I initially didn’t check when he was first optioned, just assumed it was 2022, but turns out it was 2021. Regardless, he’ll be out of options next year.
