The 3.75 FIP despite the ERA over 8 combined with the good SO/W numbers makes me think this might be more than pure dumpster diving. I guess it depends on how bad the injury is.

They must like see something they can refine. The IL stint may actually help so they can communicate changes and have rehab assignments to try them.

Heck, Baumann was 10-1 last year with us. 

Fangraphs describes Avila as a “kitchen sink” reliever. Maybe we like something in his repertoire that we can hone in on and get better results. 

Can never be mad at a waiver claim.
