A bat like Koshanksy doesn't come available for the price of a waiver claim very often...

Well, you should also ask why did he become available. Other posters have pointed out holes in his swing. He is 27 and still hasn't been able to establish anything in the majors.

We could have released Waters or Pauley, but who do you think we are going to need more this year? I think it's ridiculous that some people are getting so worked up over this. It's one thing to question the way the GM runs the team, but you continuously take it over the line by lambasting MacPhail for every move or non-move we make. We didn't get Tex, so just get over it.

This is my issue, here.

Why are we pretending we just passed on Justin Smoak?

Seriously, it's getting absurd. Are we really supposed to believe that this guy is more likely to be our future 1B than Snyder? I know it's great to have depth, but it's not like we're hurting at the corners.

Mike Carp?

That is funny.

Several teams with thin 1B issues let this guy through. Why? Probably because he is not very good.

Beggars can't be choosers. I think every NL team has a LT solution for 1B in the minors or majors anyway. There is no DH so 1B would be his only position.

What do you mean we aren't hurting at the corners? We have zero depth at those positions in the minors. Our depth consists of AAAA players that will all be minor league FAs after this season and one DH.

I'm not a prospects guy. So when someone like Koshansky becomes available I have to go to site such as Baseball HQ. This is their scouting report on Koshansky from both 2008 (when he was rated Colorado's 15th best prospect) and this year (Colorado's 14th best):

Clearly not something to get upset over. Unless, of course, you're looking for an excuse.

You must spread reputation around before.....

Again JTrea, do we need to go over how you can't just look at one stat and fly off the handle again?

Ryan Howard had holes in his swing and was 27 as well when the Phillies gave him a shot. Granted Koshanksy isn't Howard, but he's at least worth a waiver claim. I can't believe people think Waters and Pauley would be more valuable to the Orioles than Koshansky. It blows my mind...

I'm sort of surprised you don't have a candle lit for Costanzo. He's got a lot of power and strikes out a lot, too.

I thought Scott Moore was supposed to be our savior at 3B.:laughlol: By corners, I'm including corner OF's too. We have Salazar, Reimold, Montanez, Moore. The 1B situation, while not ideal, has some depth. Snyder should be ready by 2011, maybe earlier, if all goes well. I wouldn't mind if we had claimed Koshansky, but it's not that big of a deal. We don't really have anywhere to put him, and he's not good enough to just toss our other options out. If we could take him without putting him on the 40 man roster, you might have some validity to your anger but now it just seems misplaced.

Howard was 25 when he was called up the Phillies, after posting 371/467/690/1.157 in 61 games. Also, his second time around at AAA.

    • He’s an awful matchup for Cowser
    • As badly as we have played for 2 months now, we STILL have not lost more than 2 in a row since before the All Star Break.   So I'm going to cling to that and say we get the W tonight.   Then one more in the series and take 2 of 3. I am as perplexed by the hitting slump as everyone else.   But I refuse to believe it is "real" and somehow indicative of talent, and that it is impossible or even unlikely that we will break out of it.   Adley IS better than the numbers we have seen for several months.   Just by virtue of age, Holliday is a guaranteed lock to put up better overall numbers than he has so far.   O'Hearn, like Adley, has enough of a track record that we know he is better than what we have seen the last month or so.   Santander is slumping which was somewhat expected due to his great stretch, but that slump won't last forever either. There's absolutely no reason this team should have so many games with no hits for the first 3-4 innings, or only 2 or 3 hits for the first 6, 7, innings or even the game.     It sure as hell leads me to question what kind of hitting coaching we have, but I refuse to believe the team we are putting out on the field should have those kind of games with the frequency that they have been.   So I can only conclude that it will end.   Gunnar has started getting hot.   If a couple more hitters join the fun it can be contagious.
    • You are never as good as you look when going well and never as bad as you look when you are not going well. That’s always the reality.
    • He very well may not have an injury, but also very well may have back that's bothering him a bit. I don't know, but I have to hope his absolute awful slump at the plate since June is because of something not right with him physically.
    • I don’t think his performance was as sustainable as it was in previous years though. He was hitting the ball slightly harder, but his walk rate was way down and his K rate was way up. His BABIP was also a lot higher than his career number and IIRC, his xwOBA was worse than his first 2 seasons. He was still good but most advanced stats pointed to him still being worse offensively than his first 2 seasons. His BB/K rate has stabilized at least, he’s just not doing any damage when he makes contact.
    • We have a very bad end of the year schedule for attendance.  We know once school comes back that attendance will drop unless you have important games vs teams in contention.  Our schedule since middle of August when schools went back has is. 4 games Houston drew well but then had the Sunday night game the day before a lot of schools went back that hurt attendance. 3 vs the White Sox 3 vs the Rays 3 vs the Tigers  3 vs the Giants. All the big series seem to be on the road.  Red Sox which is semi fighting for playoffs, Yanks which could be for division then Twins which could be for the 1st Wild card seed.   The Yankees and Twins series would have drawn well well for us compared to what we will see with who we have.
    • Attendance is only going to be so high for weekday games, especially during the school year.  Next year you won’t have the Phillies series at home, so you have to adjust for that as well. So the team is going to have to do some special things (agree with Frobby that winning in the postseason will help). One thing I don’t see happening as much is the drive to sign up for season tickets now to get postseason tickets this year. With so many getting to go last year, after years of not going, there is a certainly level of novelty that gets worn off the second straight year. So I really think what they do in the postseason and offseason will determine where things stand for next year.
