Would like to read more about him, but certainly an intriguing pick give it is their highest hs pick excluding holiday at 1/1 in since baumler/mayo in 2020.

Yes but they may have saved enough from comp-5th round to pay for this. I think any savings here to 10th round are for overslot later.

I wouldn’t be stunned if we had some savings from Vance. Braves and jays saved between 250k and 500k at picks 21 and 24 last year, and I wouldn’t have guessed Waldrup was an underslot guy last year. Or even Ninmala or however you spell it given the hype they got. Certainly more than Vance was getting this year. He felt like he was sliding rather than getting hype.

DJ is from around here, have saw him play a few times.  He is a great athlete with some tools.  He can pick it well with good footwork and quick release and  average to slightly above arm strength.  He has a short stroke that helps him turn on balls.  I think there more power in his game in the future as he grows and learns some.  He played at a small private school but held his own in some tournaments with upper level competition.   This is most likely an over slot pick but we probably already knew the number we needed to get him out of his Southern Miss commitment.   I really like this pick even if it wasn’t a pitcher as it is upside pick with projection.  A good comp might be Luis Garcia for the nats.

Heck - tanner witt probably wishes he had taken whatever extra money we might have thrown at him. Wonder if we can throw a late pick at him again and see if we can get him healthy.

I coached against this kid last year. I just collected some clips from where we lost in the quarter finals to them. You can get a decent idea of his athleticism even though the clips were overwhelming. He comes from an amazing HS program that was loaded.
