Dunno what's best. With some guys, if you see a good looking pitch, you better swing, otherwise they'll eat you up. The "being patient" thing is a rule that varies, based on who you're facing.

And if the guy is throwing strikes like Shields, that is also true. You don't want to constantly face 0-2, 1-2 and 2-2 counts against him.
