When are we going to find a real closer?

Sherrill is good left-handed setup man and would be a great compliment to Johnson/Ray. He simply is not a closer and its painful to watch a decent pitcher being used in a role he isnt best suited for. I also rarely feel comfortable when he is facing a right-handed batter.

Switch Ray to closer and if that doesn't work, see what options we have on the farm.

I can't stand Sherrill. His stuff is so-so and he can NEVER finish the game without a problem.

Some of you are being ridiculous.

Saying you hate him, can't stand him, etc....??

Are you kidding me?

If you want to say that you feel he needs to be replaced as the closer, that's one thing but saying you feelings of hatred towards to the man is absurd.

I really, really dislike when people take stats going back to the previous season. There are how many months off in between seasons? Not to mention that you have to factor in fatigue from the season's worth of work he put in up until July.

I really, really dislike it when people ignore the evidence before their eyes in evaluating pitchers. Sherrill has been an escape artist as a closer ever since he got here. Last half of 2008 he was horrible. Spring training this year he was horrible. So far this season he's been well below average despite having 3 saves.

Last nite he blows that save except for a magnificent play by Markakis. Tonight he falls behind every hitter he faces except for the guy who was stupid enough to swing at the first pitch and Sherrill twice comes about 5 feet away from blowing a 4 run lead and giving up a game winning home run on 3 - 1 and 2 - 1 pitches.

Sherrill is not a good closer. He may be a bulldog and he may battle (and I love him for that), but he simply doesn't have the stuff to shot down opposing hitters. I'd rather see Ray or Johnson in the closer role than Sherrill and a change can't happen soon enough for me. He needs to go back to the lefty setup role in which he was absolutely filthy for the Mariners two years ago - the O's pen will be better for and so will Sherrill.

Completely agree. Sherrill needs to go. This is a classic case of making a move BEFORE the sht hits the fan, as opposed to after. And rest assured, if we leave GS in this role, it most certainly will hit the fan.

If Sherrill is the closer for the entire season, I don't think I'm going to live until my 30th birthday. This is absurb...I'm pacing around my house and pouring glasses of whiskey on a Tuesday night in April. I don't know if the Sherrill as closer thing is going to work out. Second year through the AL, I'm beginning to think the league has a leg up on him. What other options do we have? I for one wouldn't mind passing it along to Johnson even though I know that won't happen until George really screws up.

It has long been known the message board is the home of the scziophrenic fan

I'll take a shot of that whiskey my friend. Sherrill is not for the faint of heart.

Seriously though, in the back of my head I know God is an Orioles fan so he's gonna help GS pull through, but he's aging the fans as the season goes on. After JJ's bingo bango 9th inning I was praying that Trembley would throw him out there for the 10th. When I saw GS the pacing began. I'm not feeling 'Mr. Excitment'

    • I remember him from his time with the Braves when I was in Atlanta. This is from the 'Rick Camp Game' in 85.
    • I don’t think his lack of command in the early going is going to be fixed by changing roles.  Irvin typically has very good command.  He didn’t at the beginning of last year, but recovered it after a stint in the minors.  This year he’s having early problems again, but I think the reasons may be different.  He’s gained velocity and he’s added a new pitch that moves well but he hadn’t quite figured out how to command.  So, I don’t know if he’ll figure it out or not.  If he does, he could emerge a better pitcher than at any previous time in his career. In any event, he will get at least two more starts before Means is ready to return.   Hopefully he’ll make some progress, but he’s likely to find himself in the bullpen when Means returns regardless.
    • Irvin is probably the most frustrating pitcher on this team right now. He has good velocity and good movement, but consistently misses his targets by a foot or two. Monday night the Twins hit a number of missiles that by luck or pluck didn't fall in, but a better team would have probably put up a touchdown against him. I think Irvin would have more success out of the pen, throwing as hard as he can for 20 pitches, rather than as a starter where he has to hold back a little so as to eat innings. Of course that's not going to resolve his problems with lack of command, but at least he'd be in a position to do less damage out of the BP than by starting every fifth day.
    • As some people have noted on the Holliday thread, a quick release can help make up for less than a rocket arm and he's quick and has good hands.  Seems to work well with Gunnar too.
    • He’s been murdering a lot of balls.  99th percentile in average exit velocity, 97th in hard hit rate.  He’s been a little unlucky, with a .331 xOBA, .361 xwOBA going into last night.
    • It's only somewhat relevant to this post, but that game saving catch in Seattle, and the subsequent game winning home run is quite possibly the most impressive thing I ever saw within one inning of  each other.Cedric Mullins did that. I watched Willie Mays for most of my life...I simply dont think he ever did that...certainly not in extra innings and so close those moments were together.
