Wieters

Nice post.

I agree on all accounts. The Orioles are not in a position to be thrifty. They have ZERO leverage. The stadium is more than half-empty on every given night, save for homestands versus the Red Sox and Yankees, in which case they're full of out-of-town fans.

I'm not declaring Matt Wieters the saviour of this franchise. I don't think that's fair to put on any one man's shoulders. The situation itself, though, will be a clear indicator as to what direction this team is really headed.

The last thing I want to hear come Thursday morning and the O's are Wieters-less are excuses referencing "long-term plans" and "over-priced market".

100% agree....As i have said(and i said the same thing about Loewen), signing him respresents much more than just signing a draft pick.

Just to clarify...EVERYTHING has to be done before 11:59pm tomorrow, including the physical. Whether or not that's already been done I'm not sure. There can't be an "agreement in principal". It has to be a signed contract with all T's crossed and lower-case J's dotted and filed with Major League Baseball.

I can see it now...We get the contract signed and the physical done but the fax machine doesn't work.

Hopefully (if we sign him of course). But he could also be the next Eric Munson too. He is not a sure thing like is being implied. His career as a catcher could take a Brandon Snyder type wrong turn his first summer as an Oriole.

Like I've said, I want him signed - he is a great fit. But he isn't so great a prospect as to give him a blank check and give him whatever Boras wants.

Whether he's the "once-in-a-decade" player Gammons declared him to be or he's the next Eric Munson doesn't matter to me. Right now, he's a VALID and WORTHY #5 draft pick with virtually no negatives on his scouting report. The franchise that drafted him is clouded in a humiliating fog of disconnection with fans and a decade of losing.

Doing whatever it takes to sign Matt Wieters is the right thing to do.

Didn't our guys talk to Boras? If they felt his asking price was over the top, they shouldn't have drafted him this year.

Yeah they did....but who says what was "understood" then is the same now...like Boras might have "upped" the ante. Wouldn't put it past him.

It wasn't looking good at lunch time. You can kis the 5th round pick good by also unless McPhail decides to spend some money.

I think i saw Arrieta wanting 900K-1 million....What are we offering? How could we not get him done?

When he was drafted, Jordan said we got 3 first round talents...Wieters, Bascom and Arrieta...So, he wanted him here and knew what it would take.

You are right on here. The O's have a solid nucleus of pitchers. 2009 could have an offensive foundation including Markakis, Wieters, Teixiera, and the two guys whose last names start with R but escape me at the moment. Or it could be much worse than that. However, for it to become reality, Wieters MUST be signed tomorrow!

My understanding is McPhail is the one balking at signing these guys. Could McPhail be the new Syd Thrift to carry out the Angelos Plan?? got to admit that his hiring came out of the blue.

If MacPhail is Syd Thrift part II I am done with this franchise until Angelos no longer owns it...

Are you hearing that Jordan could leave if we don't get these guys signed?

This can't be happening. It is just too ridiculous, right? Even for the O's?

Wow, if BB is right and MacPhail is the one holding this up when Angelos is giving the go ahead, this is truly horrendous.

Yep, that's the one that got me officially pissed. Maybe they are just screwing with us and just want to make us agonize until Wednesday night. I wish that were true, because if so, they are doing a great job.

    • The Achilles heel for this team is going to be the unit that doesn't step up in the postseason. I can easily see scenarios where: the bullpen is hot and provides good performances but the offense sputters and isn't clutch the offense comes up big but the bullpen blows games late starting pitching tosses some clunkers (not really likely with Burnes and Eflin) and they can't recover the defense sucks and gives opponents extra outs to work with, blowing games open when the bullpen or SP would have been able to escape and continue We've seen all of these units falter at one point or another during this season.  We've also seen all of these units perform very well at different times throughout the season.  So, we'll see what turns out to be the Achilles heel for the Orioles in the playoffs starting next week.
    • I agree I missed the mark on a correct forum, and ask a moderator to please relocate to Rants as that game annoyed me yesterday. I appreciate the strong moderators here and know I'm not one of them.     Sorry for making it worse at a tough moment.
    • Nail hit on head. It really comes down to the offense in the playoffs for us. I think our pitching is good enough overall especially the starters. Shaky sometimes sure, but they can hold their own most of the time. If we don't bring our "A" hitting game in the playoffs we won't go far.
    • The bullpen has warts for sure, but if this offense doesn't figure out how to hit good pitching in the playoffs, the bullpen won't matter. Even I got a little excited when they put 5 and 9 up on the board Tues and Wed, and then it crashed back to reality last night when I remembered they were facing Schmidt and Stroman. When facing a real ace like Cole they were completely shut down. What's gonna happen next week when they face Skubal, Reagins, and/or Lugo? The mediocre bullpen won't matter if they can't figure out how to score some runs off pitchers like that...
    • Why carry four 1 inning guys over a LH long option? Cionel stinks and should not be on the roster over Povich when you still have Akin, Coulombe and Soto.
    • Really would be nice to win tonight OR have DET lose so then they can play around Sat/Sun when the games would have no bearing on the seeding. Dont want this to come down to Sunday and having to win to get the 4 seed or then there will be some tough decisions that have to be made.
    • Looking for a big performance from him next week. This is why he’s here.
