Wieters

Some of the decision has to go back to Weiters. Since he has signed with an agent he can only go to independant ball. So if he is serious about starting his career now vs. another year it is his responsibility to go to Boras and tell him to take the best deal offered. That is why there is a deadline. I like the earlier one now. Gets everyone to the bargaining table in August instead of much later.

He hasn't signed with Boras. Boras is only advising him.

A national writer headlining with "Orioles In Danger of Losing Weiters" doesn't concern you? If we close or things were going smoothly, do you think this would be the angle the article would take? Do you believe there's no difference between that or if the article said "Orioles Close to Signing Weiters"? They COULD be in the same circumstances in both cases, going back and forth, discussing parameters, etc. but if you saw the second headline, you wouldn't assume "gee, things are going well, looks like its going to get done!" Of course you would. Which means to lead with the first headline means things are NOT going well. Theyre NOT close. And we're 2 days away from deadline.

Yes, the headline did scare me, but when I read the article, I found that nothing new was reported. IMO, Rosenthal was just trying to get people to read the story.

Let's just say that this article was about some random team: the Diamondbacks. If you read a headline that says "Negotiations Ongoing With Draft Pick" you most likely not be interested in reading it. However, if the article was entitled "Diamondbacks In Danger of Losing Draft Pick" you would probably be more likely to read it.

The article that Rosenthal wrote really said nothing different than anything the Sun has written about the negotiations, it just has a more worrisome title.

Now, am I worried about the negotiations? Of course. The deadline is in two days, we haven't signed Weiters, and Boras isn't exactly a friend of the organization. Did Rosenthal's article incite this fear? No way.

FWIW, I'm certain somebody other than Rosenthal wrote the headline.

I'm not trying to be dense, but maybe I am anyway. Is there any actual news here? I didn't see any. Nada, zip, zilch. So, what's new about this?

That's what I see... just another shot at the O's, when there are ELEVEN OTHER TEAMS THAT HAVE YET TO SIGN THEIR TOP PICKS AS WELL.

It'd be fascinating to know if Wieters would have been the O's pick if MacPhail was aboard at the time of the draft.

That'd be the real test of MacPhail's ideology.

On the one hand, the Cubs paid up for Prior in 2001, when MacPhail was presiding.

On the other hand, an earlier poster really nailed it when he used terms like "pragmatic" and "penny-wise" to describe MacPhail. We know in Minny he operated on a shoestring budget. In Chicago he had more budget to work with, but he was pretty steadfast about only handing out big bucks to established fan-favorite stars like Sosa and Wood. Big-ticket free agents he wanted little to do with, and the Cubs never signed one.

Put it all together, and I'm suspicious that Wieters would've been his choice.

That said, I expect a deal will get done -- given the circumstances MacPhail inherited, overpaying is better option than the alternative.

I saw him on Anita Marks one day and he was asked about Wieters. There was almost a smirk on his face and I dare say by his reaction that it wasn't the pick he would have made.

That said, I have full confidence that he will sign Wieters. I'm not jumping off the Bay Bridge with 2/3 the posters just yet.

I think it's telling that Prior was the only pick that MacPhail paid up for and that the Cubs didn't get sign Samardzija signed until after MacPhail left.

Davearm, I'd be interested in hearing your opinion on Samardzija. Do you think he would have been signed if MacPhail had stayed??

I posted these comments from Boras in a thread yesterday and no one commented. This is from an article in Yesterday's Sun Paper.

"They are ongoing," Boras said. "Obviously, the thing I try to do with this type of player, we try to make sure we have a fit long before the draft. We try to be very upfront about our view of the player and make sure they know how we feel. [The Orioles] let us know that they have a similar view of the player from [owner Peter Angelos] on down."

Doesn't this sound much more hopeful to you? Not conclusive by any means, but it sounds like some groundwork was laid ahead of time.

    • The bullpen has warts for sure, but if this offense doesn't figure out how to hit good pitching in the playoffs, the bullpen won't matter. Even I got a little excited when they put 5 and 9 up on the board Tues and Wed, and then it crashed back to reality last night when I remembered they were facing Schmidt and Stroman. When facing a real ace like Cole they were completely shut down. What's gonna happen next week when they face Skubal, Reagins, and/or Lugo? The mediocre bullpen won't matter if they can't figure out how to score some runs off pitchers like that...
    • Why carry four 1 inning guys over a LH long option? Cionel stinks and should not be on the roster over Povich when you still have Akin, Coulombe and Soto.
    • Really would be nice to win tonight OR have DET lose so then they can play around Sat/Sun when the games would have no bearing on the seeding. Dont want this to come down to Sunday and having to win to get the 4 seed or then there will be some tough decisions that have to be made.
    • Looking for a big performance from him next week. This is why he’s here.
    • It was R-R-L-R coming up. Cano is the guy Hyde matches up against the toughest hitters. Yes, those guys got to him the previous game but that is his job and Hyde also probably saw a redemption opportunity to get his confidence back after a tough outing. I don't see why that was bad move except in hindsight it didn't work out. Congrats if you called it in the game thread.
    • Soto and Judge are both first ballot Hall of Famers when they retire.  Soto is younger than Adley, has a career bWAR over 36, and dominated the 2019 postseason as a 21 year old. Folks probably weren't paying much attention to him or the Nats back then, but he has been a force ever since being called up in 2018. And Judge...not sure why nobody else saw value in a six and a half foot man with a ton of raw power, but good for them for nailing that 32nd pick in the draft. Having these guys 2 and 3 in the lineup is such a game changer, because there is so much pressure on the opposing pitchers to not screw up with any of their other 7 hitters.  One guy you may be able to get around.  But 2.....much harder.   That being said, I do think it is more about us losing the division than anything else.  Tampa showed us last year how to keep fighting in spite of injuries. Those guys were decimated and were like a relentless swarm of bees hanging around us all the way until the last weekend.  They won 99 games with an extremely depleted pitching staff and a slew of no-name hitters who kept coming up with big hits.  We lost this division by playing uninspired, unclutch, and lame baseball for three full months.  And amazingly, we will have gone all of July, all of August, and all of September without so much as a 4 game winning streak.   Winning the season series against every division opponent for the second year in a row is something I am very happy about after years of being a doormat. I am sorry we couldn't win the division, but I am also glad to be playing next week and not sitting at home waiting to play a team on a high after winning a playoff series.
    • It's game 160 tonight and we just discovered our bull pen has warts? Elias's fault, Hyde's fault - we've had ample threads of he sucks, they suck, fire him, demote him, etc.  Well we are off to the playoffs and the pen may be the reason we don't go far. And if so I doubt few on here will be surprised. It is what it is going forward with some but not necessarily significant adjustments. We play this year out with the hand we can put together - next Monday. Till then, just win one in Minnasota for the bottom line. Last night is over and IMO really didn't teach us anything we didn't already know.
