ESPN has an interesting article out from Jerry Crasnick about plate discipline, and it does a pretty good job of summarizing the arguments for and against the heavy emphasis placed on it in today's game, and whether or not it's something that can be developed or is an instinct you just have.

Interesting quotes from various players regarding the subject:

Daniel Murphy: "Plate discipline for me is swinging at something that I'm looking for and I can hit," Murphy says. "For the most part, I like the pitch down, so I try not to swing at anything up until two strikes, because if I swing at that, then I'm out."

Chipper Jones: "For me, plate discipline is being able to know what pitch you want to put in play before you step in the box and not swinging at anything else but that."

Jeff Francouer: "If on-base percentage is so important, then why don't they put it up on the scoreboard?" Francoeur says.

Francoeur is off course well-known as a hacker. The interesting thing about his comment is that I have seen it put on the scoreboard at Camden Yards, and I'm sure there are several other stadiums where that is the case.

Including Turner Field I think...
