I know he never bunts, but if you watch closely, 3B still play him very shallow a good percent of the time. That's really the biggest benefit of bunting. Not getting hits when you actually lay them down, but to draw the 3B in with the threat of bunting making it easier for you to rip singles and sometimes doubles past them.

So as long as the 3B are in on him fairly often, he's getting the biggest benefit of the occasional bunt without ever having to lay one down.

Most bunts are just giving away outs. Maybe you're moving the guy over, but for the most part, you're guaranteeing an out. I'd rather take my chances with the guy actually getting on and not sacrificing an out, especially when that hitter is Brian Roberts.

Now, if you're talking about trying to bunt for a base hit when the third baseman is playing you way back and you have speed, then sure. I'm for that. But just laying down a bunt to move a guy has never made any sense to me.
