MacPhail's frugality is hurting this team

This wholly misunderstands the role of FA purchases on a team undergoing a systemic rebuild.

It's as important as, say, "we get a new scoreboard and the Yankees build a new stadium."

I understand where you're coming from. We need to rebuild. I understand that, but we're not the only team with young talent. Check out the Redsox, They have young talent falling out their ears. We can go back and forth till the cows come home. The fact is We need a mixture of FA, Trades and Young talent like the best teams in baseball do. You can rebuild in the AL cenrtral or west ,but not the AL east. We need a 3rd baseman like a flower needs rain. Was Wiggy the answer? A good FA is needed at 3rd. I'm not saying we should sign FA like the Yankees, but we do need one or two. Most people here would be happy with a .500 team. I'm not one of them. I want a world series championship back in baltimore where it belongs.

Our FA signings right now relative to the Yanks are irrelevant. We're lapping them in developing talent, and that's what matters.

The real question is whether or not AM will pull the trigger when the need arises.

Now we're on the same page. We shouldn't piss money away like the Yankees do. As you have said when the need arises.

Has it ever occured to you that the talent in this draft isn't what Jim Callis, Keith Law, yer boy Churchill, etc... hyped it to be?

What is your malfunction during the draft?

I agree

if those guys knew what they were doing

well

they would be running a team instead of running mouths

And historically, he never has, in FA anyway.

But considering the FA market is lousy this offseason, I don't really want him to as it was this past offseason that we should have spent.

However if bats like Gonzalez and Cabrera become available, the O's need to go after them as they have the chips and $ to get those two.

? I know I'm new, but is he on crack? Gonzalez might be available, but I dont think Cabrera is, Im not so sure we give up what it takes to get them anyway, We have seen some decent (and thats a stretch) pitching over the past few weeks, certainly an upgrade over eaton and hendrickson in the rotation. However that being stated, You dont give up good, young, pitching prospects for semi aging talent. Especially that even if you do add one of those, Where does it put us? Without pitching, we are useless, especially in this division, I know the Blue Jays are winning because of all the huge bats they have in their lineup right now, oh wait, my bad its Halladay that is bringing it home for them, Look I could see if we have 7 stud pitchers and we happened to be one hitter away from a wildcard or division, but the fact remains we are not. Andy Mcphail this, Andy Mcphail that, He is the reason you even have some hope you wallowing fool. Im sure he eeked you out in the race for orioles GM, and thats why you are so ignorant to the promise that lurks on our doorstep, but please lets trade it all away for glen davis, I mean Gonzalez. You and your thoughts in this matter, are pathetic.

Ease up on the personal stuff.

That said, if you can actually get through to him, you'd be the first. And just about all of us have tried.

I've always wondered when it comes to forums, that people writing them can criticize people (for instance Andy Mcphail) without ever knowing them personally, and they view that as acceptable. However should one dispense an ill feeling twords them in retort, it is considered wrong. Somewhat of a double standard I feel. Its not so nice to be on the wrong end of an accusation.

I just said that because the personal insults against another poster are something that will get you banned. Works the same for players and GMs. Criticizing their decisions and play is a different matter.

Show me where I called MacPhail a "wallowing fool."

I may critique MacPhail's actions, but I never personally attack him or any other posters on this board.

It is not my intention to get into some form of debate over if you said this or that, (However I was not overly fond of the "Latin bonus babies"). So I am asking a real question when I say, I could call something that someone said a wallowingly foolish idea(s), and that falls within the guidlines?

You can say it's a foolish idea. That's attacking the idea.

You can't say the person who said it is a fool. That's attacking the person.

"Bonus baby" is a term used by many to describe high priced amateur talent.

Citing specific usages:

It isn't intended to be an offensive term.

    • Over the 35.33 innings of his last six starts, Dean Kremer has given up only 10 earned runs for an ERA of 2.55. In four of those starts, he's gone 6 to 6.33 innings.
    • I'm glad he's on our side.
    • Thanks for sharing. I've been wanting to see something just like this about Felix.
    • Oooooh. Didn't expect that recall. I'm excited to see it! Bruce has been grinding it out a long time in Norfolk. He started the season looking good, and he started 2022 looking good against Major League talent. Can he peform in June 2023 the way that he performed in April 2022? I hope so. I'm here to see it! I like the idea of left handed starters. Because we have none in the rotation and I want to see 2 good ones sprinkled in. I've got my popcorn, and I'm looking forward to seeing what Bruce Zimmerman can do!
    • Let's start with Ramirez... 1) He'll be 31 in September 2) He's signed thru 2028 3) There is $105M remaining on his contract for 2024-28, for baseball ages 31-35 (he'll be 36 when the contract ends 4) His power production has dropped dramatically in 2023 despite the fact his FB rate has increased 5) His overall offensive production is the lowest it has been since 2015 (age 22) I think the Indians might be happy to offload this contract if they could find a taker to give them some minimal value for it and they are not in contention. My conclusion: If the Orioles like him for the money over the next 5 years, he might be worth a 3-for-1 exchange of truly unknow prospect potential, but not Westburg, Cowser, or GrayRod.  Think 1 of Prieto OR Willems plus 2 more hard throwers from Delmarva.  I would be seriously concerned about how a contract like Ramirez' would constrain the Orioles from signing Rutschman or Henderson to the sort of extension that will make them career Orioles.  Just like in football, where fans are tossing out 2nd round draft picks like they were party favors, I really dislike trading any top 100 prospect and certainly not one that comes with a strong possibility for an over-market priced contract. Bieber... 1) He's 28 as of 5/31 2) This is his worst season since his rookie year with a depressed K rate, increased BB and over 1 hit/IP, but he's still hanging in with an ERA that is somewhat better than the league average. 3) He's making $10M this season and will have his final year of arbitration prior to 2024, which makes the cost of him with a 1.5 year horizon bearable if you can assume he'll maintain his current 110 ERA+.  In addition, given the short horizon and age, that's a much smaller risk than for Ramirez. 4) This is where ME and his team come in to see if they can identify WHY he's not pitching nearly as well this season in addition to the obvious "Will he put the Orioles over the top?" My conclusion: Bieber may well be sought after, but I wouldn't trade any of Westburg, Cowser, or GrayRod for him.  I'd probably be willing to trade either Rom OR Ortiz plus another couple of live arms from the lower minors.  Westburg plus 2 Delmarva arms for both Ramirez and Bieber would be an enormous risk (see Ramirez), but I could get behind it if ME and team have decided he won't be nearly the offensive threat he is now in Camden Yards.
    • I have no idea how the management works here.  I think the Chris Davis fiasco is still a constant shadow. However, we're tied for the second most wins in all of baseball.  Which is astounding given our stat line.  The Giants stats are almost identical to ours and they're a game under 500.  That's where our stats say we should be.   So something else is going on.  I don't think management is going to mess with the chemistry,
