Rosenthal: O's more willing to deal Baez and Sherrill

I don't see Kam Mickolio, Bob McCrory and Jim Miller as alternatives. Even Ray would have to show me he's really back.

There is a difference between an "alternative" and a "good alternative". For instance...when I was getting dressed this morning, my wife's skirt was an "alternative" to pants, but it's not an "alternative" that I found particularly attractive.

Unless you are team in a pennant run with a hole at the closer position' date=' trading for a closer is typically a stupid move. You are mostly trading for the name that comes with the label of "closer". That is why smart teams (Oak) place pitchers in the role, let them get some success and then trade them while their stock is high.

This is why we should be looking to trade both Baez and Sherrill if they can continue to stay hot the next couple weeks.

I would be confident that between D. Hernandez, Ray, Johnson.. we could backfill our set-up and cloers guys.[/quote']

Sorry but I am not ready to trade either one of them.

Hope the wife doesn't read the OH, otherwise RIP friend.:laughlol:

I don't see Hernandez as a closer now. He does have the kind of stuff for the back of the bullpen, granted. But he has little or no experience in that role; he's been a starter.Plus, his control is a bit questionable right now.

Almost all good closers started off as something else, usually minor league starters. A lot of them were starters right up until the game where they became the major league closer.

But what does the short-run matter when we are focused on the long-run? If we can trade Baez ( who is gone at season's end) and/or Sherrill ( who is a solid loogy but has been playing an imposter role as a closer) and get talent back to help this team the next few years' date=' then does it really matter if we take a few more lumps while these younger bullpen arms get experience at the big league level?[/quote']

Well, FWIW, AM disagrees with you. After he showed up here and took a few months to scope things out, he announced that the O's were a MIN of a couple years away from being decent. He also announced that his plan was to grow young pitching. He also announced that one of his first priorities was to fix the BP, which he promptly did. When you're developing young SP's, you want to ensure that they have a fair shot to win the game.

You and a few others might not care if the team gets it brains beat out in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings, but AM does (thank God), and so do the players, and so do most fans. To act like it doesn't matter is making the mistake of pretending this is a stock portfolio. It's not. It's a baseball franchise, and the rebuilding of the franchise is at a place where the team needs to get better, year by year.

    • People keep talking about Norby's flawed defense, meanwhile Holliday is looking pretty bad out there. Small sample size, I guess! But how long is the leash?
    • the Royals gave us the business tonight...except for the slam by Adley...we stunk to high hell tonight...especially the pen...Akin and  Tate...they both came up small.
    • I know this isn’t the question that you asked, but my recollection is that you worked on the business side for the Orioles at some point, so I think you might be able to weigh in on this idea: do you think there are business reasons to extend a Gunnar or an Adley? I know you’re view is generally that extensions are overrated by the fanbase, but that largely seems related to the idea that you are paying for past-peak years (if I’m off base here, it wasn’t intentional—just my recollection). I tend to think that from a business standpoint, an extension for a young player would not make a material difference concerning the amount of tickets sold, revenue generated, etc. and would really just make some people on X happy, but I don’t really have anything to support that opinion.
    • The way he is pitching that's like throwing gas on a fire.
    • I don't think Elias will seriously entertain bringing back Santander.
    • Left the game with 1 run in and 2 on ,2 outs in the 6th and Akin gave up both runs. Bad luck tonight in my opinion but I'm sure there are many on here will say he sucks and should be replaced.
    • Yeah, we're kind of getting off track here since this is a Jackson Holliday thread, but I will say I don't see how Mountcastle gets traded -- and even if he did it would be to unblock Mayo and not Kjerstad.  Both Mounty and Mayo are righties, and it doesn't look like Mayo will play third base anytime soon.  I think two of the prospects need to get traded -- maybe in the offseason or next season -- unless Hays, O'Hearn or Mounty are dealt.  I think there's a chance the O's bring back Santander, but that's a big wildcard too.
