It's pretty clear that Meredith is going to get rocked in the AL East with a 1.6+ WHIP and extreme home/away splits. At home he is 2.89 ERA, away 5.50.

I don't think it's that clear.

While his home/away splits look bad this year in a small sample size they haven't been a concern in the past. In fact, in 2008 they were pretty much the reverse. It's almost meaningless to look at small portions of reliever performance mid-way through a single season.

A groundball pitcher has more value in Camden Yards than in PetCo Park. He will allow hits (inflating his WHIP) because he's an extreme ground ball pitcher, but the hits generally won't kill you. A groundball specialist usually won't experience as much trouble transitioning between leagues as a normal pitcher, especially one who is prone to the long ball.

He's pretty much an average middle reliever. He has value if he is used primarily against right handed hitters and in situations when you'd need to induce ground balls. He is a guy who can make a lot of appearances without wearing down.

I think he has a pretty good chance of being a solid BP arm. Not a bullpen ace but a reasonably successful guy who you can turn to to get out of a jam and someone who gives a lineup a different arm angle to look it.

This is just this year though.

Just last year he had a 3.03 ERA away, 2 runs better than his ERA at home.

In 2006 he had a 1.20 ERA away.

Bottom line is we're talking about 20-35 innings each season home or away, the ERA is going to bounce all around with a slice that small. The park doesn't concern me with such high GB rates.

Grade: C+

We had to do something to make room for David Hernandez, who will be recalled to pitch tonight’s game in New York. We had to get rid of a position player since we’ve been playing a starting pitcher short. It made sense to trade Salazar for something rather than lose him for nothing trying to pass him through waivers. Meredith is a submarine type pitcher who gets alot of ground balls. Hes 26 years old, so almost like a younger version of Chad Bradford. Meredith has pitched 36.2 innings so far this year giving up 47 hits (but only 1 HR), 13 walks, and striking out 20 batters to the tune of a 4.17 ERA and 1.64 WHIP. He was unhittable as a rookie in 2006 when batters only hit .170 off him. In the past 3 years its been closer to .300. His lifetime ERA is 3.49. He’ll be a nice guy to have if we trade Danys Baez and/or George Sherrill, he’ll be under our control for 2 more years after 2009, and he has an option remaining. Look for Kam Mickolio to be optioned later today to make room for Hernandez on the active roster, but he’ll be back.

Cla? Why is someone named Cla in this world, at this time in history? Really. Throw a GD "Y" on that baby, or maybe really splurge and go for a "UDE"... or maybe a "RENCE"... This guy needs to have his mother questioned: "Ma, why did you name me Cla? Hmm?"

"Well, honey, Daddy is a loser, so we couldn't afford any more letters."

This first name is really unsatisfying. Kind of like "Pie" as a last name. Just seems to be something unsatisfying about it.

Sorry for the ridiculous post, but it is late. And his name is Cla, after all.

It actually isn't his real name, he just goes by that. Of course, when your real name is "Olise Claiborne Meredith", you don't have a whole lot of options.

Seconding that we should call him Claw Megadeth.
