Justin Turner

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the responses. I'm sorry if this topic came across as "reactionary". That wasn't my intent. I just wanted to point out that Justin Turner is having a good year and has been really productive in the minors. He's 6 years younger than Brian Roberts. And as a poster eluded to earlier, if we could trade Brian for some valuable pieces and have Turner waiting in the wings, why not? Or the flip side, maybe a trade of Jake Arrieta and Justin Turner for a starter or slugger. I just hope the O's play this smart and maximize this guys value whether it's with us or another team. Again, thank you for all the feedback and support.:)

Bump .... Justin Turner is scorching:

.310/.358/.403/.768

Post all-star break: .348/.395/.435/.830

Away Games: .327/.376/.452/.828

In my opinion he needs to play 3B from here out this year. I think he could be valuable as a placeholder for Bell and I also think that you realistically have to consider Roberts for value.

He doesn't have the pop to stay at 3B for a full season, especially in the majors. Good contact hitter, lots of doubles, will hit a couple home runs, think Brian Roberts' numbers without the steals.

I question if his arm is strong enough to play 3B much too, but I'm not sure there. He'd be a great 2B, and probably a very good UTL guy.

I question his arm strength too? I wonder between he and Ty Wiggington and his range which would be a better defensive 3B. I don't think he should play everyday, but certainly could platoon and be a stopgap 3B until Bell arrives. He is earning his keep in AAA and I would hate to see him sent back because there is no room for him here, especially when we have essentially the same two players at SS.

After looking at some anaylasis of the Pirates trades two months ago and taking at least a month to judge the recent ones I would say the Pirates are on to something. Sure they dumped salary but they have purged themselves of good ballplayers that could not win. They are starting out from scratch to try and put together a winning team. It will be interesting to see which method works. The Orioles method of growing young arms and purchasing/keeping older bats and popular players or the Pirates purging their entire roster. I would love to see Turner play 2nd base in Camden Yards next season.

Yeah, I think if something is done with Izzy/Andrus he is the perfect fill in UTL guy, but that has to be with a more permanent solution at 3B, I'd have to see him there enough to really tell you how his range would do, but I know going from 2B to 3B is tricky because of the new angle on the ball, and it comes so much faster, 1B to 3B is easier than 2B to 3B. I like him in AAA this year, and give him a real good look in ST to see what he can do at different spots.

His MLE OPS is around .700, is he creeping into the conversation?

Sure, but as what?

Roberts is here to stay, like it or not, and I don't think that Turner can play regularly anywhere but at 2nd.

Turner is a trade chip, but not for long, considering that he turns 25 in November..

Since when is 25 a bad age to arrive at the majors? Not everyone can rocket through the minors or has star potential at 22 years old.

Andrew Bailey is older and never dominated the minors and now he is a dominant reliever for the A's.

Justin was drafted the year before as a 21 year old and has moved up every year he has been in the minors. He started at Rookie ball in 2006 and now he's a solid AAA player at 24 years old. There's nothing wrong with his age. If he was 28-30 years old, I would start to agree with you, but anyone that shows they can hit has trade value (see Oscar Salazar).

I am disappointed he has played mainly second, but he has seen regular time backing up SS and held his own just fine. I'd like to see him take more reps at 3rd as he could battle Scott Moore and Ty Wigginton for that spot next year if he can hack it on the field at third.

Hitting .313/.369/.414/.783 ... I think he deserves a September call-up, but he probably won't get one because he is not on the 40 man roster.

Rich Hill could easily be moved to the 60 day DL to add anyone who isn't on the 40 man. I could also see Alberto Castillo removed from the 40 man if he is not part of the September calvalry.

This is the only year they can trade him easily. His limited no-trade kicks in after this season and becomes more restrictive each year IIRC.

But we can stop all the trade talk. He isn't going anywhere. Furthermore, since players making $11-12 MM/year don't usually ride the bench, he is going to be the starting 2Bman through at least 2012 if not 2013.

Anyway Roberts is not the problem right now. I thought the extension was a terrible idea for the long term (too long) but he's a good, productive player at this point.

But if people are getting antsy and talking trade during the best of his remaining seasons, before the extension has even started, it's going to be a long four years.

I see another Melvin Mora situation in a couple of years. We seem to fall in love with players more than wanting to win.

    • Agree with this.   The number one priority should be locking up Henderson, Holliday, and to a lesser extent, Adley.   Not that I don't want Adley around...I'm just not sure how many years you want to invest in a catcher.   Making a deal for a guy like Burnes this year could be an annual/semi-annual kind of thing.   Maybe you splurge one year and trade for a guy with two years left before FA where you may have to give up a bigger prospect.    I don't think it's smart to have long-term money in pitching.
    • Based on the current state of the organization, I'm curious to see what this homegrown rotation looks like. What are the odds there's an impact SP in Seth Johnson, Chayce McDermott, and Cade Povich? Pretty low. What are the odds all 3 are busts? Pretty low. A likely median scenario is you have 1 serviceable SP, a reliever, and a bust. Or something along those lines.  I for one am much happier Burnes is in the rotation rather than Bassit, Eovaldi, or someone of that caliber. My preference would have been both once we learned about the Bradish + Means injuries. This time, we paid for the Burnes type front of the rotation pitcher in years of prospect control. I don't think that will always be a luxury we can afford.  Almost an entirely homegrown lineup and a GM who has shown the ability to piece together a productive bullpen. The rotation is where you strike. But it takes investments. No reason the Nationals can sign Scherzer and go win themselves a World Series and that avenue of success building is cut off to our collection of billionaire owners running a bottom 5 payroll currently.
    • I would go for older but still elite/above average guys in areas of need who will sign short term deals even if they are high AAV, like some of those Verlander and Nelson Cruz contracts. Sonny Gray would have been good this year. Not sure who the equivalent guys will be next year but I don't see us being in the market for 10+/$300+ type deals. At least I hope we aren't.
    • I do not think the Orioles will spend >$200m on annual payroll anytime soon, but they have room to sign. Burnes Ace type every 3-6 years.    I would offer $150 over 5 years with incentives and options that could exceed $200m, to hedge a sunk cost for injuries.
    • Interesting, and Smoltz’ point is not just valid, it illustrates a terrible tendency throughout society. And the pitch clock theory is ridiculous. But the problem isn’t hard throwing, but the twisting motion of the arm. Try just going through a throwing motion and at the end, sharply pronate or supinate your arm. Then do it at whatever your individual max effort is. I’m not even sure how to do it. But that extreme twisting movement can’t possibly be good.
    • We have to close the roof.
    • Kjerstad obliterating AAA pitching is almost to be expected at this point, so the thing I’m keeping a close eye on is his BB rate. Up at 11.5% now, while still maintaining only a 20.7% K rate. Very encouraging, since I’m sure pitchers are pitching him more carefully now. It’s good to see him willing to take those walks. He’s now turned the hard contact into power and he has good contact ability for a power guy, so the biggest flaw in his offensive profile is his aggressiveness and tendency to chase. I’m sure the Orioles’ message is that’s what they want to see improved from him at the AAA level.
