8 teams after Sherrill!

There is not one player in our system who you could plug into closer and expect to be successful 4 out of 5 times. Plug in all the suspects you want but we don't have that player.

How can you say JJ can't? Arrietta might fit the bill as well

Sure we can keep trading all-star caliber players for prospects. Sherill has an easy 3 years of pitching in him.

I guess I will start watching the minor league games. Cant keep recycling players and building other teams FRANCHISES while we build our FARM SYSTEM.

It's funny that you say that.. We got 10 players for two players in Bedard and Tejada. Of those ten, 7 (after tonight) will have made the MLB. And there is a chance that we could pick up both Bedard and Tejada this offseason. Not likely, but it is a possibility..

I'd like to see Koji in that role as well, because if he can be successful next year, he's traded at the deadline. But, can he pitch back-to-back nights or four times in a week? He's so delicate I worry about him in any role.

I presume you wouldn't be surprised then if the Dodgers or Angels refuse to give up a top 5 pick as part of the package for him?

I have no idea what a team would or wouldn't give up for Sherrill... my point was that Sherrill is replaceable on the Orioles. They gave him a chance to be a closer... he was a suspect at the time they did it. So why can't someone else on the team or in the system be a future closer.

How exactly is replacing Bedard with Jones, Sherrill, Tillman and Mickolio building our farm system?

Or replacing Tejada with Scott, Albers and Sarfate?

From my count, those trades massively upgraded our major league team for years to come.

I understand... but you can't reduce his value as a closer and not reduce his value to the teams we want to trade him to.... just wanting to make sure we're being consistent.

We will not get a top 5 prospect for Sherill. GM's know his value is inflated, and McPhail is asking for top guys. Either his price drops and we are underwhelmed by the trade, or Sherill stays.

Look at what the Indians got back for a former Cy Young winner. Not any of the three "big" prospects the Phillies had. You think they're going to give up an outfield masher a top corner prospect for George Sherill? No way.

If you can get a player or two for the future then you should trade George.

As for replacing him

Jim Miller, Josh Perault (sp), Koji (my choice)

Yes I think Koji can pitch two, three or four innings a week without issue.

He comes in throws strikes and gets guys out.

Fatigue should be less of an issue with 24 hours between innings.

it's not just about the value, it's about the market. He's in high demand which makes our asking price that much higher. How many teams were in on Lee?

Well the Indians made a poor deal IMO.

It he does trade GS it's doubtful he can orchestrate any other moves at the same time.

It's also doubtful that anyone else really has any trade value at this time. The other tradeables - Baez, Huff, and perhaps Mora - fit the profile of August 31 tradeables.

I concur. GS has been automatic. Trading him will be painful, no matter who they think is groom-able.

I think he was pointing out his recent struggles, although not mentioning it outright -- which include the AS break. Basically Johnson has blown as many saves as Sherrill, and he is not even the closer.

Johnson's numbers over the year are still good, 3.30 ERA, 1.08 WHIP. But, when you look at those with the numbers just for July, you realize how much they came up recently.

In July for Johnson:

8.2 IP

9 H (3 HR)

5 BB/7 K

7 ER

7.27 ERA

1.62 WHIP

I am not saying Johnson couldn't do it, but he has been struggling just a little as of late. Not sure if he has the mental makeup for it or not, which is the main thing it takes. He definitely could.

Only problem with that theory is that Sherrill in his last year with the Mariners had 3 saves and 4 blown saves.:eektf:

Will trading Sherrill cost the O's some wins this season? Absolutely.

Will we be able to find a good closer to replace him in the long run? Most likely.

Are we better off in the long run trading Sherrill for 2 or more young players with upside? You betcha.

I hope Andy isn't too fixated on quantity in this trade. Better to get one Josh Bell than three Blake DeWitt's.

    • What I'd like to see in the next game Holliday plays, is for him to keep his eyes following through on the ball when he swings. In the last game I saw, he was yanking his head off the zone when he swung and couldn't see the bat to the ball. He was missing wildly and it wasn't even competitive. So, keep your eye on the ball! Follow all the way through! If your swing is so violent that it's yanking your head off the sight of the ball, then adjust your mechanics because you can't hit what you can't see!
    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
    • Well it certainly doesn't look like he'll be winning Rookie of Year award. And if we send him down for like the tiniest amount of time, we get him for another year, right? I think if this poor hitting continues it's financial mismanagement not to send him back down. Grayson got sent down and came back way better.
    • He certainly isn't a bust but I wasn't happy with the pick at the time and I don't love using the second overall pick for that type of player profile. Westburg signed for slot so he's irrelevant but Mayo was a great use of the money saved.
    • Think Heston will be the next call up. Mayo’s K/BB ratio is poor and I think they’ll want to see that even out. Stowers and Norby have seen their numbers slip a bit.  It will likely take an injury to an outfielder or first baseman, but I think we see HK next.
    • I have to laugh at some of my pre-draft thoughts as well as others. I will say on behalf of myself and some others is that what we did not understand then was what the Orioles brain trust knew to be their model, and what they best developed. What traits they were looking for is an important thing to know, in hindsight anyway. And really, the Jackson Holliday leap in development was not something most of us heard anything about until about a month before the draft. I saw him the previous summer and I cannot say he was all that impressive, but it was only one look. His physicality took a big jump after that.  I will also add that we’re never going to know what would have happened if they drafted Austin Martin, Jones, Lawler, Lacy, etc. Their development could well have been different as O’s. The funny part of this board, in general, is the absolute certainty some have in their opinions and how eager they are to trash Elias and staff. There is plenty of humility to go around, now that things have played out. It’s fun to finally have a truly great front office and ownership group, and a stacked stable of horses.
