Compared to a 90 MPH fastball that was high and inside, with the clear intention of hitting Youkilis, who cares. Both should be suspended, Youkilis more.

No, I understand that completely and agree. But it was like he was trying to make his point sound more solid by calling a helmet a hat like it's a piece of fabric.

I think it also should be pointed out that Youk was like 2 feet from him when he threw the "hat".

How embarrassing for Youklis. You have a running start start, you weigh more, the kid is backpedaling, he turns away as you throw your helmet and you still get thrown to the ground once you reach him. Absolutely pathetic. What a bit**.

I don't think the intention was all that clear. Especially if you watch Porcello's reaction right afterward. Even if it was intentional, Youk should have just taken his medicine and gone to first base like a big boy, not charge the mound like a petulant little child.

So a hat as a weapon = bad, but a baseball as a weapon = good?

I don't care what happened in the game and I don't care about youk, but, throwing at someone is throwing at someone whether its a hat or a ball.

Nah. Throwing at somebody's head is wrong. But just plunking a guy is no big deal. Especially when batters show up wearing body armor and go hanging and diving over the plate. And double-especially if the guy is wiggling his big butt at you before every pitch. I generally like to think that I'm above childish enjoyment in stupid stuff like this, but I'm not. I wish all the P's in the league would take turns plunking this guy, and have a betting pool among themselves to see who can get the most style points on the take-down of him when the he charges the mound. It could be like a sport within the sport.

Yep and if you're going to act like a child and charge the mound, try not to look like a giant vagina by getting dropped by a guy who's smaller than you.

    • I'm going to cop out to an extent in that an elite CF changes how you look at the OF defense especially RF.  If EBJ hits enough with an 80 D he gets into the gaps and a more stationary RF like Kjerstadt is more palatable.  So to me especially in the OF it's balance between positions but an elite CF such as EBJ (as advertised) changes things.  Good defense makes for good pitching.
    • I agree with Will Clark, Chris Young, even Albert Pujols (but for different reasons than he stated). He needs to stay up.  Every pitcher he's seen has said, "I'm not going to be the one you beat" and has pitched him like he was, well, Juan Soto for lack of a better comparison in this instance. So many pitches that have painted the corners inside, outside, up, down. He's really gotten a baptism by fire.  So after 100+ plate appearances, reevaluate. I think he will have had something click in the next week and all of this hand-wringing will become history. If he's still struggling and then sent down, will he miss seeing ML pitching? Perhaps. But it's been noted that the Os farm system tries to indoctrinate good pitch selection habits before they're brought up. If he didn't have enough time to get that,  it could be the one thing he'd gain that the ML just moves too fast for.
    • Interesting comparison to Bregman.  I recall seeing him in BP at OPACY one night and he had a tablet with him that he'd check after every BP turn.  We didn't have anything like that at the time and I was fascinated by it, but more relevant was the fact that he continued, after that initial struggle, to minutely monitor his swing every chance he got in an attempt to constantly improve.
    • Pro Athletes never have problems with confidence or failure?  Then why do teams feel the need to hire sports psychologists?   Not directed at you but the brick wall you’re discussing this with.   Players are human.  They aren’t robots.
    • Sure, just saying Stewart isn't that fair an example since you aren't getting the good with the bad.
    • He was a -10 defensive player at a premium position. Would he not be happy with a Jeter? It wasn't that hard to figure out what I was talking about if you had stopped and thought for a second.
    • Just personal preference, thats why the thread exists. I don’t want to have to laugh off bad plays. Im not sure Nelson Cruz would be a fun player to have on your team if he was playing the field every day.
