Roch: O's may look to get a big bat this offseason

You're right. My apologies.

I guess I just have a hard time believing that if they can contend with Fielder (due to the youngsters progress) that they wouldn't be able to contend without him. How many wins can one bat be? He's listed as just under 5 WAR on fangraphs, and the Orioles are 21.5 out of the wild card. Even if you're going with Huff's WAR for the season, that's only a 6 win increase (if I understand that value correctly), which would still leave them more than 15 games out of the wild card. Obviously the kids will improve, but I don't think they're going to be 15 games better. I think they will take their lumps, as most young players do.

But sorry for the argumentative post earlier.

No need to apologize. We just have a difference of opinion. I am probably a little too optimistic about the kind of improvement we will see next year without even making any moves. I am really optimistic about our pitching and think that the bullpen is going to be absolutely dominant next year if the young guns can give us enough innings. I also believe that the offense under performed this year and will see improvement by not having Huff and Mora in the lineup. I really feel like the losing will stop next year. I just hope we can add to this team and make us a contender now.

I'd rather give up more pitching than give up one of the best young CFers in the game. You underrate Jones and how hard he'd be to replace IMO.
You overate Jones. He's a good but not great defensive CF who will put up around an .820 OPS with 20 HR and a low OBP. We have someone who can replace him with better defense and probably better OBP. As far as the pitching goes, in order to build around it you need numbers.

How can we possibly have an excess of pitching when we honestly don't have a clue if we have any pitching? How do we replace the pitching you advocate shipping off for a two-year rental? IMO, it is easier to replace Jones with Pie, than to try and replace Tillman or Matusz, when you also advocate getting rid of Britton and/or Erbe and/or DH and/or BB.

You know who the Brewers would really like to get rid of?..Jeff Suppan, his ugly stats and his high salary and buyout..which is 14.5 million.

Now, he does have a limited NTC, so maybe we are on his list..I am not sure.

However, I wonder if we were taking Suppan, Hardy and Fielder back, which is almost 30 million in salary for 2010, what kind of a "discount" would we get for Fielder?

If you go with the premise that Guthrie for Hardy makes sense and that they would need to replace Suppan, that is your start.

So then, what does it take for Suppan and Fielder?

You can't find Adam Jones in FA, at least very easily...

LOL....Because of this year and his +/- stat?

That is crazy.

The guy has upper echelon defensive potential...He has showed it a lot and showed it last year...A few bad months doesn't change anything about his upside.

You are obsessed with the small sampling of these defensive stats.
