The reason I remember the pronunciation is because the books actually make a point of the pronunciation. They go out of their way to make it clear.

I just now looked online a couple places. They all do it too. This includes the web site of the Negro Leagues Baseball Players Association:

Their nickname is pronounced "EE-light" with a Southern twang.
