The Forgotten Man: Scott Moore

He'll sign with an organization that might actually give him a fair shot to play.
He deserves better and I hope he gets a real shot to succeed somewhere. I think he'll have a Casey Blake like career if somebody was willing to give him an honest shot.
As usual I agree with you as your posts are usually among the best I read here. I absolutely feel that Moore has been shortchanged on an opportunity with the major league club. I have always liked him since being at the game at OPACY where he hit a grand slam and disappointed a sea of Boston fans by leading the Orioles to one of their rare victories over the hated Sox.

I also fear he will become the next Jack Cust as another "one who got away."

Lordie lordie. With friends like this on "my side" of the supportive-of-Moore argument, who needs ... whatever.

Look at his home/away splits, FB%.

He had to alter his swing to even have the little success he did at Harbor Park. The stats will show you that...

So what? His overall OPS has not broken .800 the last two years at the AAA level. You think he is going to go from being an injured, less than .800 OPS at the AAA level to a starter at the ML level. :scratchchinhmm:

I don't speak for Trea, and I don't agree with the idea that the organization owes Scott Moore anything. I do, however, think the TEAM may benefit by bringing him to Spring training to compete for a position if he chooses to remain with the organization after he hits minor league free agent status -- unless there's something about Moore's attitude or health status of a negative nature that has not been widely reported and of which I may be unaware. Mind you, even if it did so, I'm not suggesting that he'd be anything other than a longshot proposition to make the team, let alone wind up our OD 3B starter. But the threshold for bringing in an NRI is considerably lower than that, and I believe he more than qualifies as a guy who exceeds the threshold for an invite. Once again, however, it appears that the point is moot, as it seems that he'll be moving on of his own volition.

This I agree with.

Ah, judged him on one at bat. Good deal.

Scott Moore has none of the attributes that made Jack Cust hard to lose: the ability to get on base, the ability to draw a walk, and the ability to hit for power.

Scott Moore will not be another Jack Cust, for those exact reasons. The only thing Scott Moore has over Jack Cust is that he can at least play somewhere in the field and maybe do a half decent job of it.

Oh wow, one home run, that just so happened to be a grand slam. Never mind it's one of only two home runs he ever hit for the Orioles  As you've been known to say, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.

Why trivialize such an important attribute?

Keep ignoring the Norfolk park effects and in turn his home va. away splits, it really helps your position in this debate...

How do you interpret that I like Moore based on only one at bat when he hit a grand slam helping to beat Boston? I specifically posted I have liked him since that at bat, meaning his whole volume of work in case you cannot figure that out on your own!

I think he is a good all around player who has been hampered by injuries and not getting much of an opportunity to show his talents at the Major League Level.

If you don't like my view on him too bad!

How is that trivializing it? It's probably true. That fact that Moore can play a half decent 3B and Cust can't play decent anywhere is irrelevant.

Aside from the very weak props you give Moore for his defense (which, as I recall, is better than maybe half decent on the corners), I don't see the statement too often around here that the only thing Player A does better than Player B is have a much higher OPS.

I guess you told me.:P

I just can't wrap myself around your player evaluation system. Your criticsims of certain players and your affection for others confuses me.:scratchchinhmm:

I can't believe you all are comparing Moore to Jack Cust. The only thing they have in common is that each strikes out too much. At least Cust makes up for that with his ability to reach base via the walk and with very good power - neither of which Moore is able to do.

As for Moore's defense - average at best. If it's hit to him he'll get the out, but don't expect him to show a lot of range.

So what's going to be the excuse next year when he's with another organization and doesn't get a sniff of a major league field?

Stricty as an informational query, as I respect your knowledge and opinion, how does Moore's 3B defense compare with that of Wiggy and Turner? (I THINK these are currently the two leading internal candidates for the OD job, as I'm guessing that Bell will be treated gingerly when it comes to promoting him up the ladder.)

BTW, even though I have been supportive of Moore in this thread, I feel compelled to add the disclaimer that it's clearly NOT been my position that Moore will make any major league team's OD roster next year. Indeed, I'd be surprised if he does. As for his olfactory needs, however, I imagine that if he has a strong desire to sniff a field, they might just go ahead and let him do that.

    • That is the big question. I had assumed it would be pretty long, especially with him wearing Cal Ripken Sr's old number and him being the consensus top prospect in Baseball. But if there's been no progress in all that playing time, and it's starting to cost us games, I don't know how the team can take the brunt of that for too long. Especially in a chase for a championship inside the toughest division in baseball.  The Front Office has surprised me before by looking like they were being patient with a guy only to suddenly option him one day without warning they would.  If we're being perfectly honest Jackson looks like a boy playing amongst men out their right now and he looks like he belongs in the minor leagues with a reset for now until he gathers up experience like Westburg and Norby, or at least as much as Henderson did. So, we will probably watch Jackson ride the bench vs Ragans tomorrow. What happens after that is something we will just have to wait and see. I'm willing to cut him some slack, but if it continues to cost us runs and games, then there's not much room for patience.
    • Hicks was a big blessing to the team--we're very lucky we got him when we did. There's no way the Cowser we saw last year could have matched what Hicks provided, even on defense and on the basepaths. You cite BABIP, but drawing 35 walks in 236 plate appearances was a huge self-earned positive.
    • I had to think about it because Adley has always been a high priority for me. He's the franchise Catcher we never had. And in my opinion, the Catcher position is the Quarterback of a Baseball team. It's that impactful of a position and you need a good one to compete for championships. But with that said, Burnes is the Ace we've been waiting for since Mussina turned coat, and his contract is up at the end of the season. He's also one of the most reliable and durable pitchers in baseball. I think we should do what we can to keep him happy and make a business deal with him to keep him an Orioles pitcher.   If you're assuming that Rodriguez or Bradish will take over the Ace role, I think you've seen enough pitching injuries this year to tell you that you can't assume that will happen. You need to make sure any one of your top 3 starters can assume the #1 spot if pressed. Timing dictates Burnes as our biggest priority to work on. With Gunnar, he might be a future MVP and I've been one of his biggest fans since the moment he was called up. But his agent is Scott Boras, so good luck getting him to agree to an extension before free agency. And on that note, you'll have Scott Boras with a conflict of interest when you're trying to sign both Gunnar Henderson and Jackson Holiday long term and they both want to play shortstop.
    • People keep talking about Norby's flawed defense, meanwhile Holliday is looking pretty bad out there. Small sample size, I guess! But how long is the leash?
    • the Royals gave us the business tonight...except for the slam by Adley...we stunk to high hell tonight...especially the pen...Akin and  Tate...they both came up small.
    • I know this isn’t the question that you asked, but my recollection is that you worked on the business side for the Orioles at some point, so I think you might be able to weigh in on this idea: do you think there are business reasons to extend a Gunnar or an Adley? I know you’re view is generally that extensions are overrated by the fanbase, but that largely seems related to the idea that you are paying for past-peak years (if I’m off base here, it wasn’t intentional—just my recollection). I tend to think that from a business standpoint, an extension for a young player would not make a material difference concerning the amount of tickets sold, revenue generated, etc. and would really just make some people on X happy, but I don’t really have anything to support that opinion.
    • The way he is pitching that's like throwing gas on a fire.
