Washington Post, Allan Sloan: Why We May Help Pay for Tribune to Unload the Cubs

Zell ... is trying to unload the team in a deal that would divert almost $300 million from taxpayers to the creditors of Tribune, the nation's second-biggest newspaper company.

The proposed Cubs deal, involving a "leveraged partnership" using lots of borrowed money, is so aggressive that a leading tax expert, Robert Willens expects the IRS to challenge it. "The IRS has expressed hostility to this sort of transaction," he said.

Nothing to worry, with a Chicago politician in the White House and a confessed tax dodger in charge of the IRS.

This isn't fair in so many ways.

Obama isn't even a Cubs fan.

Even if he was, he would have almost nothing to do with this.

Even if he was and he did, as a Cubs fan, why would he want Sam Zell to get ahead by having the government write him a check?

No, but he's still a Chicago politician, where favoritism has been a way of life for decades before Obama came on the scene. I'm sure there are plenty of Democratic politicians in Chicago who are either Cubs fans or allies of the Zell family and want this deal to go through.

Even if he was, he would have almost nothing to do with this.

You're assuming the decision on whether to challenge the tax claims is made within the bowels of the IRS bureaucracy, and that none of Obama's Chicago political allies will ask him or Gintner to intervene. Neither of those are safe assumptions.

Even if he was and he did, as a Cubs fan, why would he want Sam Zell to get ahead by having the government write him a check?

Let's not get into a recitation of the sweetheart deals with which Obama has already been involved.

Wow... really? I thought you were just poking fun because of the Cubs having something to do with this story. But you honestly believe that Obama will have an influence here?

Again, maybe I'm naive and uneducated. What are these sweetheart deals you speak of?

If Obama chooses to, he will. Whether he will or not depends upon what the IRS bureaucrats decide to do with the Tribune tax case and whether Obama's pals in Chicago ask him to intercede with Gintner. It wouldn't be the first time that the IRS buckled to political influence. I don't know enough about Sam Zell to know if he's well enough connected politically or not.

Again, maybe I'm naive and uneducated. What are these sweetheart deals you speak of?

Yes, you're naive and uneducated, but I'm not going to undertake to remedy that on a baseball forum. Do a google search on Obama sweetheart deals or Obama corruption scandals. You'll have to determine for yourself whether you believe any of that or not.

Oh, that? Do I really need to respond on whether I believe it or not?

But there's no "it" there. It's just google searches.

Those links aren't even to trumped up articles, they're just to a list of whatever google returns.

It's just his own political BS. You could type in "scandal lies" or "get rich through google" and get way more hits than that...

I found what he was referring to though. The big deal about Obama getting favoritism for having .028% less than the average home loan on his mortgage which is so laughable. And then the ties to Rezko which is just grasping at straws. This is Glen Beck material here.

Exactly, I could Google "Winnie the poo" and "Corruption" as my keywords and get a thousand hits, but thanks for playing.
