BA's Eastern League Top 20

That is weird. It is the opposite with me and Bay. I kind of knew he was a pretty poor outfielder . . . seeing him so often with the Sox . . . man, he is awful. He should get on his knees and pray to Alfonso Soriano that there are worse left fielders.

I dont mean his fielding as much as I mean his offensive force. I dont see him enough to get a guage on his fielding, but I do remember one of our announcers praising his ability to play good LF at Fenway(go figure).

And, in all honesty, it could be reactionary to put Erbe ahead of Jake, and Id probably still give Jake the slight nod as far as prospect status, but if they were both at the same level and if both would have a whole nother season of rookie status, I think Erbe would pull out front as a better prospect. If it werent for Erbe bombing a season at Fredrick and following it up with a mediocre one, Erbe would probably be rated higher now. I think you can make an argument for either side, but because of longevity Arrieta would be the slightly better prospect....

Matusz

Arrieta

Erbe

Britton

Hobgood

I get the same feeling on Snyder that I did on Riemold. People just keep discounting the guy because he hits a wall every once in a while in his development (Delmarva, Norfolk) as did Reimold occasionally (last year in the AFL). I just feel he is going to surprise people like reimold did when given a chance in the ML. He seems to make adjustments and get himself back on the horse after disappointments and he gets little credit for it. Some guys cruise to AAA and have their flaws exposed and never recover. My gut says Lars Anderson will be one of those guys. Pitchers figure him out the second time through the league. He has been hyped because he has been moved before his weaknesses are exposed. The Red Sox are concerned or they would not have went so hard after TEX even after he was rated their #1 prospect and top 20 by BA.

What would be the purpose of making lists by league based on overall performance? It would be easier to make a top 200 and then sort everybody into the leagues at the end. Are the coaches making the lists like last year?

ETA: I'm glad Snyder's defense is getting the recognition it deserves.

Well, ideally the Top 20 list would generally match what you have in the overall list. My understanding is the point is to rank the prospect, rather than the performance of the prospect. So, numbers and production isn't as important as what the person doing the ranking projects from each player.

My understanding is the BA staff member makes the list, taking into account his thoughts and what he hears from coaches/scouts he speaks with.

It's a little disappointing for BA to have put JA on the Honorable Mention side of the top prospects in all of baseball a couple months ago, but just inside his League Top 20.

Frankly, the lack of support for Snyder torching AA is also disappointing. Still, three Os between the AA lists with Matusz having barely missed qualifying. Not bad - that's even a better showing then the "franchise that shall not be named". Cue Roch.

Still, that means the only O's who made top 20 lists are: Arrieta, Snyder, Bell, Matusz and Britton. Unless you think there's someone else who played at Norfolk who is going to qualify (I assume Tillman and Hernandez don't count because they are no longer rookie-eligible). Matusz is essentially already a graduate. So, in terms of players in the pipeline, in our entire system, we have one guy who barely made the top 10 in his league, and 3 others who were ranked 15-20. That's not a lot in the pipeline. Granted, a lot come through the pipeline to the majors this year.

Oh well, I don't care too much about these rankings. If I recall correctly, Bergesen wasn't even on the Eastern League top 20 list last year. Enough said.

Rookie eligibility isn't a requirement -- Gordan Beckham was listed in the Southern League Top 20.

Given that, what are the odds that Arrieta, Tillman, Wieters and Reimold make the AAA list?

Reimold is not eligible, but he would have definitely made the list based on skill set and stats.

Wieters is eligible -- he should be #1.

Tillman is eligible -- he should be on the list and in the Top 10.

Hernandez is eligible -- he could sneak in the back end of the list.

Arrieta is eligible -- I have no idea if he makes the list. I would assume "yes", but his EL ranking was a head-scratcher for me.

Just seems like Arrieta is being underrated.

He sounds to me that he should be an AJ Burnett type guy...Eat innings(when healthy), lots of K's but not enough command to consistently keep his ERA under 4....He will have some seasons like that but others where it is closer to 4.50ish.

It just makes sense...I know you and others have made that comp before.

Lots of power in that arm but not enough consistency to be a TOR guy, at least not consistently.

If Arrieta can be a healthy AJ Burnett, we will be very lucky.

Good point, so Tillman makes the list for sure, presumably near the top.

Usually BA uses for criteria on these lists

Pitchers -- 20 appearances or 1/3 IP per team game

Batters -- 1 PA per team game

So Wieters, Tillman, Arrieta and Hernandez should all be eligible.

    • Yeah, basically this, that Westburg's underlying numbers (EV, barrel %, xwOBA) seem to point at this being pretty real, or at least that there's nothing 'undeserved / lucky' about this hot streak, if it's just that.
    • The problem with a Cowser/Kjerstad/Stowers/Bradfield outfield roster is there are no right handers to handle LHP. I don't think and completely left handed outfield is the destination for an organization the values versatility.
    • Looks maybe concussion related.
    • How can you not be romantic about baseball? This seems slightly poetic. I enjoyed reading, and correlated your experience in the stands back to what I watch in Game 1 on MASN.  It was also pretty cool to hear Jim Palmer give you a shout out in Game 2 of the series on Live TV.
    • I am not worried.  It just doesn’t remotely meet the eye test.  He has been great in the field . I can think of at least 3 outstanding plays he has made and not any that I thought he should have gotten but didn’t. Meanwhile Holliday is 3 OAA and I can’t think of an outstanding play and can think of a number I thought he should have made.
    • Nicely stated Roy. Every since I was 9 years old and saw the O's vs. the Tokyo Giants in Tokyo in 1971, I've been infected with the Orange/Black virus. There is no cure and I don't want one. You and I sat at the lunch table with Jim Palmer at the 1970 World Series Champs reunion, and its still one of my enduring baseball memories. You said I looked like Carlton Fisk! I was at all 3 games in this Angels series, right behind the O's dugout. I got to see all our boys, and just simply love to watch this team play. And in true baseball fashion, the one game on paper we should have dominated (GRod vs. 8+ ERA Channing), we end up down 7-0 and lose. But watching Gunnar's homers, his electric triple, and he made a fantastic play today on a ball that went under Westburg's glove, Adley do Adley things, Cowser, holy crap. Kimbrel v. Trout with bases loaded, bottom of 9th, 2 outs, down by 2? That was fun. Next game Trout bats leadoff and torches a GRod fastball for a homer to the opposite field.  An observation.... If you didn't know anything about the team, and you only watched game 1 batting practice, you'd think Cowser and O'Hearn were the studs of the team. Mountcastle was taking BP with the reserves and he put on a show as well.  Home after 3 straight days watching this O's team, so jealous of the Balt fans in Balt that get to see the team with regularity. It's a special bunch.
