O's view Atkins as a cleanup hitter!?

I think this is way overblown. If Atkins hits as poorly as he did last year, he obviously won't stay clean-up for long. But if he returns to the level of a few years ago. he'd be great. We need a RH bat in the 4th spot, so why not at least consider him and give him a chance?

If you're going to continue to consider the details and nuances of reality it's going to be much harder to file people only under the headings of Traitor and Messiah.

That's a condition.

Oh good grief, that's another one. Now you're saying it's off if one of them catches the measles or gets locked up on a DUI.

What are you gonna want to add next?

What happens if one of them forgets to set the alarm and oversleeps, is it off then too?

Howsabout if his pet cat dies and the guy is too upset to play? What then?

Or maybe his great uncle dies and he has to go to the funeral?

What happens if DT's dog eats the lineup card? Is it off then too?

Look, this is not hard. I meant exactly what I said to begin with.

I haven't been changing my story with every post. Here's what I said:

Don't keep trying to change it with every post. It's always best to keep these things simple.

Look, we both know that both of them are almost certain to be in the OD lineup, so this is just fringy BS.

Are you gonna have all manner of do's and don't's about what happens if they're not?

Or every possible reason for not being in the lineup just the same as every other one?

Is a broken leg just like getting kidnapped by space aliens, or are they different?

Holy cow you're annoying.

Anyway, I highly doubt Atkins bats 4th. I think Roch is just speculating since DT said he wanted a power hitting right handed hitter to bat cleanup and he thinks this is that guy. I really doubt (hope) that AM and DT think the same.

How about waiting until Trembley actually sets a lineup in the regular season and we see what happens for a while before you start throwing out gratuitous insults. Jeez, its December and you're already calling a guy a monkey for a lineup that may never happen. Even if it does happen, give DT some slack. He hasn't seen a lot of Atkins, let him do what he wants in February and March and make some decisions when the year starts.

Well said. And again, as someone who has watched Atkins' entire career develop here in Colorado, IF (and it is a sizable IF) he regains any part of his form from two years ago, he will excel in the fourth spot. Should his decline continue, back to 6 or 7 or the bench if he goes under .250 again.

Spring training will likely help determine his swing status and the line-up. I highly doubt DT has set ANYthing in stone just yet, especially since the roster isn't even finished.

I read a small interview in the Denver Post today and he seems very excited about trying to show the Orioles, and the world, he can still hit.

Its very simple...Assuming both players are in the OD lineup and not hurt or whatever, 500 says Nick is batting third and Wieters 5th or 6th..Are you doing the bet or not? Simple yes or no...Not your normal bs war and peace answer that no one cares about.

Well, lets see... Since the attempted conditions for calling it off went from "DT might change his mind" and "AM might make a trade" and have been reduced down to a set of very unlikely "whatevers", sure, let's do it.

Let me ask you this...If these guys are hurt and not in the OD lineup, how are we supposed to know who gets paid? We don't.

So, assuming they play, Nick batting 3rd, Wieters 5th or 6th...$500 american dollar bet?

Yes or no?

In my previous post, I said "sure"...

For people who speak American, that translates into "yes" ;-)

This is WAY over the line. Why the hell are you badmouthing Trembley like this? He's not even mentioned by Roch.

It fits his agenda...this is Roch's view.....and if you take out 2009, many on this board would have been excited at the prospect of getting Atkins as a middle of the order guy.

    • Agreed, but on the flip side, SS is much deeper offensively than second base. Once you get past the top 5 you get in into guys like Andres Giménez, Nico Hoerner, and Gavin Lux.  2.9 is a pretty sharp number considering only 5-7 guys at 2B put that up last year.  His tool that’s going to carry him over the 2.9 is his base running. Not just steals, but he’s going to be a machine on the bases in front of Gunnar.  Holliday just has to start dropping some hits in. The numbers will come. I think the off day, and going on the road, will help him. Basically, it gets a chance to breathe.
    • Worth noting that he had a 3.40 FIP and 2.95 xFIP in his 15.1 AAA innings so his bad AAA ERA was not supported by the peripherals. Also worth noting that the Orioles have to believe there’s potentially something there with Suárez, because not only did they go with him over Zimmerman (who was on turn and optionable), but they let Suárez have a lot of rope to continue pitching in the 5th/6th innings in a 1-run game with plenty of available RP. Hyde yanked Irvin with a 2 run lead in the 5th inning on Monday rather than let him go through the order a 3rd time. He let Suárez face the Twins’ 1-2-3 for a 3rd time in the 6th inning yesterday with a 1 run lead. Neither were high in pitch count. Yes Suárez was pitching well, but Hyde could have easily said those 5 IP were plenty good enough, let’s not risk a 3rd time through.
    • I’d take the under, and I probably would have said that the day he got called up.  ZiPS had him at 2.7 before the season began, and now has him at 2.2 the rest of the way (he’s at -0.2 now, so the updated full season projection would be 2.0).  And I’d be perfectly fine with a 2 WAR season from a 20-year old rookie.  Witt had a 2.4 rookie year at 21, and look at him now.
    • Hays has largely been awful (not mediocre) since July 1 of last year.
    • DocJJ, who tells all his patients.  “Let me give you the bad news first, please”! or ”It doesn’t look too good”.
    • He is a spry 75!   Not even old enough yet to run for President in the US.
