I had no expectations for Holliday, but I did think we had a shot at Beltre. My hope for him was based on Boston's concern over the luxory tax and being able to move Lowell. Since they did not see those as obstacles, we would have had to grossly overpay for what would still have been a stop gap.

I can't imagine any Oriole fan not being a bit dissapointed. I am sure some will jump in here and say that they are not, but I don't see how they can't be. AM said he would be bat shopping. He went to KMart and got Atkins, who they hope to make a succesful reclaimation project out of. I hope they do too. Really I do, but that is not what I expected out of "middle of the order bat". If the reports are true that Holliday is resigning with the Cardinals, there goes the last FA "middle of the order" impact bat. The only option left to produce on the promise is to trade. I could see some smart trades had they added a couple of key FA's, because we would have then had the depth to deal from. Now it will require thinning out the depth they have worked so hard to amass. I am against that, as I think it will set the team back in the rebuild. So I think going forward the smart thing to do is to largely stand pat. I'd still like to see Bedard come back on an incentive laiden deal. Beyond that, I'd stand pat. But now they had better broaden there horizons a little and allow some guys like Reimold and Scott to audition at first base. That is the only way we can put our best team on the field out of what we already have. If we don't do that, we may not win as many games as we did last year.

Its expected...AM is doing a poor job thus far this offseason.

Who knows what it would take to get either of these guys here.

However, that doesn;t mean AM is doing a good job this offseason.

If you don't know what it would take to get certain players here how can you say andys doing a bad job? What if the only way to get those players here was to dole out bad contracts to them? If that's the case then by not fishing out the bad contracts would mean he's in reality doing a good job. So it's silly to assess someone based on assumptions since you are not privy to what is actually going on behind closed doors. That's my biggest gripe about the OH, alot of people make judgements based on things they are unsure or unaware of.

I know what he has and hasn't done.

I am not disappointed about these 2 signings..Its the whole offseason...Its been mediocre at best and he has yet to do anything to really address long term needs.

Let's just sit back and continue to watch the Red Sox and Yankees improve.

Its become a past time for Orioles fans.

Sigh.

I guess Beltre wasn't stopgap enough for AM. Gotta continue to shoot lower and lower.

I don't see Atkins improving considerably to be an impact bat.

I just want to know how anyone on the OH can look at the Yankees and Red Sox batting lineups and tell me how we are realistically supposed to defeat them with our pitchers and batters as they are?

Seriously.

I'm relieved that we won't be signing Holliday and I can't really be disappointed in Beltre because I'm not sure how much we were involved nor do I think he was the best player to bring in.

So no, not at all.

Whew, I'm glad we dodged a bullet of being able to add 9-10 wins to our team...

Man I hate seeing the Orioles try to improve... :rolleyestf:

That is my problem with this offseason so far. They have done absolutely nothing to improve the team long term. Nothing. And now Trembley will be judged on W's and L's??? Are you kidding me? Trembley has to feel like the guy in shackles waiting for his walk down to the electric chair.

Yes because doling out 8 year deals for a player who plays our deepest position is a good way to improve our team.

It is when you can take that depth and trade it to improve a position of need. The object is to build the best team. Not admire your one and only position of depth.

I won't be upset until the off-season is OVER. If the off-season ended today I would be upset. If AM says he's gonna add a bat he will. We should all know by now he takes his sweet little time and waits out the market. I think he's still cooking something up on the trade front.

Trea, I really want to see this current outfield play, and I want to see Pie play even more. This isn't just hometown fandom, I think they are going to be a very good outfield. It might provide more wins this year (and I don't think that many, not at all but it definitely wouldt be worth the contract.

I will also be thrilled this time next year when we've seen an improved team and are discussing our new big bat 1B addition. :D

    • Regarding the overall league offensive environment, I think it’s less injuries/depth and more to do with putridness of CWS and MIA offenses, with COL not much better.  Those three are wRC+ of 62, 67, 75 respectively. Most years shake out with the worst team around 80. FYI the Os are currently 127 wRC+ only trailing the LAD 128.  Also note that Os are second in BSR, only trailing CIN, with CIN, Os, KCR significantly better than rest of league.
    • Yeah, I was looking at our OPS numbers last night. Updated for today, we have two guys over 1.000, four guys over .900, and eight guys .736 (116 OPS+) or higher. So almost our entire lineup is above average or better with four guys producing at an elite level.  Cowser 1.139/232 Gunnar 1.022/199 Westburg .941/176 O'Hearn .938/175 Mountcastle .866/157 Rutschman .786/135 Santander .741/118 Mullins .736/116 We also have Mateo off the bench at .746/120 and McCann .667/96, slightly below average but not too shabby for a backup C.  Whenever I get the road announcers, they are always talking up our offense. Even when we are down, whenever we get a couple runners they say "here comes that Orioles offense again, they are relentless and they are never out of a game."
    • The Orioles have a wRC+ as a team of 128, which is better than the wRC+ for any single Orioles hitter last year - Adley was 127 and Gunnar 123 (although Hicks was 129 in his ~200 ABs). That’s the second best in baseball, behind only Atlanta at 128, and a good bit ahead of the Dodgers at 122, who are both riding unsustainably high BABIPs (.340 and .328; by comparison, league average is .290 and the Orioles are .294).  Despite walking at a very low rate as a team, the Orioles are doing it by being by far the best power hitting team in baseball. Their .199 ISO is far ahead of the Braves second at .184, and the league average is .143. I think power numbers usually go up as weather gets warmer too, so that should only increase. The top team wRC+ last year were the Braves at 125, and then 4 teams between 112 and 118. So the Orioles will almost certainly cool off to some degree. But I also think we could see the walk rate tick up as the scouting reports adjust - Gunnar, Westburg and Cowser in particular have been hitting for huge power at low walk rates (for Cowser, until 3 walks last night), so I could see there being a trade off of walks for less power if pitchers are more careful pitching in-zone to them going forward.
    • But when Santander gets hot or Adley goes on a power run someone else might start slumping. Cowser is not going to have a 1.139 OPS forever, nor will Mountcastle likely end the year with a .385 OBP. I think this offense is about as good as anyone could have hoped for.
    • It's been well noted that Kimbrel isn't great at holding runners and can be run on.  Given Adell's 91% sprint speed (yes, I know stolen base technique is something else altogether) I thought letting him run wasn't a bad move. He had a hell of a jump, I was surprised that the play was as close as it was.
    • I'd like to see him promoted soon to see how his limited # of bullets perform this year against better competition.
    • Unless we cannot sign Gunnar/Adley/Holliday whatsoever (because they are simply uninterested at any dollar amount), I don’t want to tie any significant dollar amount that could be going to them in future years on a player like Mullins (good not great).
