Not great words about Spoone from Trembley

""He needs to get himself into shape physically. He got a little heavy, and he needs to build his arm strength up and get that sinker back," Trembley said. "If he does … he'd be a pretty good starting pitcher. He'd be a pretty good No. 5 guy." - Baltimore Sun

It's not good to hear he was not in good shape. He was a kid who was a bit out of shape in high school and then worked hard at CCBC to become a nice pitchers body. For a guy who should have been working his butt off to get back, it's certainly disappointing to read that he may have shown up too heavy. Add in that it appears that the sink in his fastball is not there and you have to say the chances of Spoone bouncing back significantly this year is not very good.

In a spring where coaches go out of their way to praise guys, it's apparent that Spoone hurt his chances of recovery by not getting himself into the best shape that he could.

Let's hope he takes this as the wake up call he needs to start out working everyone around him once he hits the minor league camp.

Glass Half Empty - Because of the nature of his injury, Chorye needs to get himself into top physical condition to maximize his already low chances of a full recovery. It now looks unlikely that he'll ever regain his prospect status.

Glass Half Full - 2010 is a year for Chorye to get some innings and to recondition his shoulder, arm, mechanics and physical condition. We shouldn't expect him to return to his top form until about 2011. So, he's got about 12-16 months to get himself into shape in all of the areas I mentioned above.

I think Glass Half Empty wins, but I'll still be rooting for the kid.

Tony, I think the statement that he could be a good ("only" seems implied here) #5 starter is interesting.I know his stuff was rated highly here. Is this because the injury has diminished his skills and lowered his ceiling? Could that perception change once he starts pitching again?

If not, and his ceiling remains where Trembley seems to think, his future mite be the bullpen.

Exactly. We don't have to rank them on what they used to project to anymore. Remember when One-Shoulder Rivera vaulted to the top of our prospect list without ever throwing a pitch for us? And that was his peak. Those weren't the days.

Agreed, and I'm glad we have enough depth that if Spoone doesn't recover it won't hurt so bad, but it still would be nice if he would come back this year. I'm pretty disappointed in him showing up over weight. That was something he could control and it appears he didn't do that good of a job.

When the major league manager goes out of his way to mention that you need to lose a few pounds, that's not good at all.

About ten guys have passed him on the serious prospect depth chart.

Which is the discouraging part. You would think he would work hard and show up in shape, and get himself back in the discussion. His career is very much on the line.

I would think that Trembley has no patience for athletes that squander their talent and opportunities. Given the path that Trembley has taken to reach his present position I would think that he rides pretty hard those individuals he feels aren’t taking their job serious.

I agree, when I originally read that blog at MASN, I was very disappointed. I don't know if you guys remember or not, but there were reports on Spoone being in the best shape of his life last season, but then during the offseason when he was supposed to take a break from all throwing, he obviously took a break from working out as well. The "he'd be a pretty good #5 guy(if he regains arm strength and sinker)" line really is what caught me off guard. But, I guess if we woulda seen Hobgood last season in Bluefield with no knowledge of what he looked like in his HS season, someone may have said the same thing...Some did actually.

I am just glad that Zach Britton has turned into our Chorye Spoone II. I would personally say that Zach is a better prospect than Spoone was, but also, Britton is more polished and IMO further developed right now than Spoone was pre-injury. Spoone was just breaking out when he got hurt....

I have to step in here and make a comment. I also read the article about Chorye and was thinking that Dave Trembley must not know who Chorye is. He worked very hard in the off season and weighs around 200 pounds so if that is considered heavy I am thinking that are pitchers are runway models.

He worked out in the off season and ate right so who ever Trembley was looking at I don't believe that it was Chorye..

I think Trembley probably knows who Chorye is. He may have gotten the wrong impression about his weight, though. If he pitches well, everything will take care of itself.

Interesting comments. Seems like Spoone has time to become the major league pitcher we all expect him to be, trouble is he is danger of losing that status here because so many other pitchers have passed him or are on his tail.

On the other hand, I have higher expectations of him than I do, say, Patton. And we just heard alot of gushing about Patton the other day.

I've never heard a bad work spoken about Spoone before that interview. I believe Melewski or someone had a feature on Spoone fairly recently and he was saying how good he felt and he was excited to get out there. If I recall correctly, Spoone returned at the end of last year and was pretty happy with his velocity and offspeed pitches, but not his command.

I think we have to be careful and not read too much into what DT said. Hopefully it was just a little smack to get him going this year because of the number of guys on his tail.

Based on what I have read here and other places, I've assumed Spoone's ceiling is way, way higher than fifth.
