"The Man Who Betrayed His Country"

The NY Times has an excellent feature article about the reverberations in South Korea from last year's WBC title game, in which Japan beat Korea when Ichiro singled in the 10th with runners in scoring position, two out, first base open.

The pitcher who gave up the hit became a national scapegoat when he was accused of having ignored a signal to walk Ichiro intentionally. A prime TV program branded him "The Man Who Betrayed His Country."

But it turns out that the pitching coach independently decided not to relay the sign because he thought that going after Ichiro was the more honorable choice.

Great insight into the way the game is approached elsewhere.
