Surprised? Roch say it's Hernandez and Tatum

For a year now, we have heard how the young pitchers enjoy pitching to Moeller...Moeller knows these guys....and now you replace him? Horrible decision making there.

I would love to hear the justification for this.

Somewhere there was a mention that Moeller had a shoulder problem and had difficulty throwing the ball further than the pitcher's mound. If so, having guys on base running at will could have serious psychological, as well as pitching mechanics, effects.....especially with young pitchers on the mound.

It may be MORE beneficial to have Moeller in AAA (assuming he accepts the assignment.

This.

Moeller at AAA is almost like having another coach there. By the time they get off the bus at Eutaw Street, they're supposed to pretty much have mastery of their tools. The place to be learning new pitches and mastering all their pitches is in minors, not when they're facing big league hitters. Moeller is better equipped to help them get all that sorted out at NOR than the other guy is. We need some C who has a clue to be down there helping the next batch of P's get ready. Meanwhile, the other guy can throw out ML runners better than Moeller can. I think the important thing is that AM has an arrangement with Moeller which has him satisfied being what amounts to be a player-coach at NOR.

The only real case for wanting Moeller in the bigs is if you think Matt needs mentoring at being a C. Supposedly, the new bench coach can do that. I don't know if he can or can't, but the fact that he was a C is part of the official rationale for getting him.

Schmuck seems to think Moeller will refuse his minor league assignment and become a FA.

Nice going O's.

Honestly, the Orioles can never seem to get the little roster decisions right...

You mean like batting Tejada and his super declining doubles total 4th?

You really care this much about a back up catcher running on vapor fumes of his careeer?

No offense to Chad, but having him on the roster or not is completely and utterly meaningless.

Besides, IIRC Moeller has threatened to refuse minor league assignments before and wound up going to AAA.

Oh no, we might lose a completely average back-up catcher with a career .288 OBP who can't throw runners out.

So you think Tatum is a better mentor for the pitchers and Matt Wieters?

Or you want Trembley to burn Wieters out by having him catch 140+ games instead of having a capable backup?

The backup catcher is extremely important to the Orioles because of our young pitchers, and the fact that we need a decent backup to keep Wieters fresh.

Moeller has caught World Champions. What has Tatum done?

Keep the runners off the bases, and then you don't have to worry about them running. If Tatum is having to throw out a ton of runners that means the pitchers are being ineffective.

I'd rather rely on Moeller's knowledge and game calling skills than Tatum's arm to help out our pitching.

But he's NOT a capable backup. He threw out 2 runners last year.

Wait. Someone who routinely underestimates the importance of defense doesn't approve of the Os selecting the better defensive catcher? Shenanigans!

When a catcher's arm goes, he loses not only his ability to throw out runners, but his ability to scare runners away from running. People talk all of the time about Markakis and the fear he inspires in runners, but this is a much bigger deal for catchers.

This was probably his swan song ...

BASERUNNING

SB: Ryan, Br (2, 2nd base off Matusz/Moeller), LaRue (1, 2nd base off Matusz/Moeller), Rapoport (1, 2nd base off Gonzalez, M/Tatum), Ludwick (1, 3rd base off Matusz/Moeller), Lopez, F (4, 3rd base off Matusz/Moeller).

Basically, when you have a 90% chance to turn a single into a double, you have every capable runner try to steal.

    • Will we go with 4 lefties in the pen?  Coloumbe, Perez, Means, and Irvin?  Perez could be the odd man out since Means and Irvin can start if need be.
    • Free look at the next two opponents as OAK-NYY at 700 tonight looks like the only night game on getaway day. As if this series wasn't already uneven enough on paper, Oakland had a bad break yesterday as Zach Gelof strained an oblique and is heading for the IL.    Maybe not as bad a break as Cody Bellinger and Triston Casas apparently breaking ribs. The A's have competed well with the Yankees so far this week - it would be nice if their A relievers have some work to do tonight.
    • Not that I don't want to see Elias make an effort to reinforce the bullpen, but I think it's far too pessimistic to argue that the current roster can't win a WS. If you assume full health by October (a big assumption, of course), then a team that can roll out Burnes/Bradish/Rodriguez in a short series, with this lineup, and Kimbrel to close (again, assuming he stays healthy and doesn't wear down) certainly has a chance. Clear holes that COULD prevent a World Series run sounds more accurate to me.
    • Webb, a little. Baumann, none.
    • It's not really negative, it's just there was talk that he was an advanced college bat that might only need this year to breeze through the majors to put himself in line to directly replace Mullins.  With his struggles in A+ so far, that timeframe gap between Mullins, and EBJ being ready, looks to be bigger than just the 2025 season.   Our roster is pretty stacked.  We like draft picks/prospects, but are in win now mode at the MLB level.  WS mode too.  I don't know many teams that sell off their 29/30 year old GG CF while trying to win a WS.
    • How much remorse, would we have if we let Webb go? Or Baumann?  I am astonished that Ramirez is still here, I’d rather have Jonathan Heasley, and that is not a ringing endorsement of Mr. Heasley either.
    • I mean, no. At worst he can't even hit enough to be a fourth outfielder. There is a point in which the glove doesn't justify the bat. I do think there is a pretty good chance he at least gets a shot at the majors, but the floor could have him stalling out in the minors.
